Vista and Half Life 2

Hi there

Is anyone able to let me know whether Half Life 2 works with Vista, on a Sony Vaio laptop?

I would prefer not to purchase until I am sure it works.

Thanks
Philippa

It works fine on Vista, but I do not use a Sony Vaio laptop.

Thanks.

I guess it will be as good as the specs on the laptop. they meet more than the minimum but not the recommended.

I have a question that sort of relates to this. Why is it that I only get like....45fps max with no AA running Counter Strike Source in Vista?? Heck, I knew that there was a small performance hit going to Vista but I used to play with 4xTRAA and get 120fps+. Wtf is this 45fps business?

And yes, I'm using the latest Vista Nvidia drivers with a 7800gtx.

Dumb Dude, try turning off Vertical Sync. I have the same issue if I have VS turned on. It doesn't get you back to what your frames should be, but it seems to help with my 7800GT.

PipNZ, HL2 works fine on Vista but what are your specs exactly? I assume it's a fairly new laptop if it's running vista, so you should probably be okay.

If you want to see if it runs well before buying it, you should download the demo :)

Not to sound mean or anything, but I've tried all the usual whatnots. Re-installing drivers, driver settings, in-game settings..you name it. About the only thing I can come up with is that maybe its my "Legit" version of Vista that is somehow killing performance, but thats highly unlikely.

They are not great but I think they will be fine:

?Microprocessor: Intel? Pentium? Dual-Core processor T2060 (1.60GHz)
?Processor System Bus: 533 MHz
?Cache Memory: 1MB (on CPU)
?Main Memory: 512MB DDR2 SDRAM. 2 SO-DIMM slots. (The pre-installed memory module uses one)
?Hard Drive: 80GB (HDD Recovery Storage: 7GB, C:Remain ) Serial ATA, 5400rpm

With AA on I get around 70-80. With it off I get 100+. I have seen it dip as low as the 40s in certain explosive , high load moments.

I think it is just young Vista.

PipNZ I think you are going ot have trouble running HL2 at any decent quality.

It's not Vista, it's just developers/hardware companies/etc are being ridiculously lazy.

They've had months/years to work on updating their software/drivers and they're simple dragging their feet.

There needs to be drivers based on WDDM and software updated to work on Vista, officially.

As for me, gaming is more or less perfect - even beasts like Stalker and SupCom.

Perhaps its just to drivers, they still haven't fine-tuned it yet

512is the very minimum for vista home basic and your vid card sounds like onboard. iirc the requirements for running aero glass are a DX9 card with 64mb. with that laptop, i wouldn't bother getting vista, let alone getting vista for gaming.

True. I have 1Gb and Vista just sucks it up when I run CS:S. It uses about 92%. Performance will suffer greatly with 512Mb system and 64Mb video.

That still doesn't explain my 120fps drop to 30fps.

Like I said above, I used to run 4xTRAA and everything maxed out with no problem at all, and now, with NO AA on, I can barely cut above 30 half the time.

So you don't have V-sync on in the game or control panel? I didn't see you mention it after Naudian brought it up.

He said he tried all the usual stuff including in-game settings, so I assume it didn't do anything for him :(

Also, I thought the original poster already had Vista installed, if not then for the love of god don't do it D:

Yeah, I have V-Sync forced off in the driver panel, and in Counter-Strike. I've set all the ingame settings to low, no hdr, no AA, 2xAF, low textures, you name it. It didn't improve at all. This kinda sucks seeing as how Vista is pretty much making my 7800gtx perfrom just as awesome as an FX5200.

Just to give you guys an idea of how awesome CSS looks under Vista (mat_dxlevel 70):

Bah, whatever. I've tried EVERYTHING I can possibly do with these stupid drivers, and just tweaking the heck out of Vista. Maybe thats what I get for not paying for Vista, or maybe its a good thing I didn't. Heck, it would be worse if I payed the stupid 300+ dollars they are asking only to downgrade my hardware performance this badly.

I wonder if you are somehoe not getting video card render support, like you are running of software/cpu only.

Nah, I'm getting hardware support for sure, but I purposely forced DX 7.0 just to see if it would improve my fps, but as you can see, it did not.

its just vista having probs, im sure they'll sort it, valve should be adding better vista support to all there games soon.

I love how achilles contradicts himself.

"LOL ITS ALL VISTA BUT WAIT TILL VISTA VERSIONS ARE OUT."

The root of the problem is a lack of Vista support, we just haven't figured out from where this support needs to come. Is it Vista itself? Maybe not. Is it Nvidia? Could be. Is it some new fangled feature or control we haven't figured out yet? Probably. It's difficult navigating this OS considering the last 3 were basically the same.

I know this thread is old now, but I just thought I'd update.

I guess it was the stupid drivers after all. Nvidia released a new set of drivers today and I installed them and BAM! Everything is playable now. All high settings on CSS with 4xAA gives me 60+ with occasional 100+fps parts. Its still not as it was with XP, but hey, its getting there. Just thought I'd share.

O rly? *searches*

Edit: CSS is still the same for me...I'd bet all the other source games are the same too.

Anyone know how to add Half life 2 into Vistas Game explorer it keeps saying it's Half life source and it's annoying.
