So I'm getting a new computer soon, It's coming with Windows Vista Ultimate (not my choice), but I want to know how does Vista supports games now, like Stalker which had many problems with Vista. I'm going to try to play Crysis using the Very High settings, is it possible to disable DX 10?

I've been running Vista for about 6 months now with no issues. I'm not sure about Crysis, but COH lets you pick how its rendered in game. If you don't have a video card that supports DX10, you'll only be able to use DX9 anyways.

Good luck with that, Vista or not.

Vista is great for gaming...performance is equal to if not better than XP, primarily because while Vista does suck up resources while on the desktop, it seems as though when you open a 3d application full screen, it shuts down the unnecessary processes and frees of your PC's power to go to that...

I'm taking shadows to medium, I think. If it just doesn't work, screw it I don't need graphics so much.

I don't have Vista but in terms of games I've heard more good things than bad.

Thank you very much for the link, I'm going to read it now.

I didn't know that. I guess it's a good choice then.

By the way, the basic specs:

2 GB kingston DDR2 800MHz Dual Channel PC6400 (by the way, what is PC6400?)
Intel Core 2 Duo E6850 @ 3.0ghz FSB 1333mhz
GeForce 8800GT 512 MB (default clocks)

That's it. The basic specs. I'm not certain about those things like motherboard, etc.

So is it good?

No problem, keep in mind that it is nearly a year old, IIRC they talk a little bit about driver issues which should be solved by now.

Yep I noticed that...I picked up Vista last Jan. and did have driver issues initially, but only a couple months later fully functioning drivers for sound and video were out and most the problems were gone...looking forward to SP1...

Well, I read it and I'm not worried about Vista gaming anymore. It's around 1 year old, so most problems are now fixed. I was also worried about Aero + games performance, but it seems like Aero doesn't affect performance. I wish they had tested Stalker though. Stalker is a game I want to play, I wonder if it's problems with Vista were fixed already.

Yup Vista turns off the Aero theme and defaults to basic when running a game..since I mostly game, I just didnt even use the Aero theme...

From what I understand, STALKER has problems with XP even...cant see Vista screwing up what already was...

STALKER runs perfectly on Vista and with Crysis you can decide whether to run in DX9 or DX10.

You really need 2GB more RAM and make sure you install Vista x64 but your CPU + GPU are good choices. PC6400 is just the speed, so, PC6400 is 800MHZ, PC5300 is 667MHZ, etc and what you're getting, PC6400 (DDR2 800) is also good.

In the games folder, right click on the crysis icon; it will desplay the diffeent modes of graphical ability

Good look with trying to play on Very High Settings, hoping your 8800gt will be able to do it

Thank you all for the tips, about the Very High thing:

It's actually possible, but if the performance is too poor, I'm just taking shadows to medium and some other things.

It's also possible for me to eventually get 4gb ram, but in some months.

Bump, but oh well!

MY COMPUTER HAS ARRIVED TODAY!

I LOVE IT!

I DO LOVE VISTA TOO BTW! YAY!

That is actually a 8800GT. Click and read video name.

The one thing keeping me from switching to Vista for good is that it still has problems outputting 5.1 sound. I installed the latest SP1 RC and the problem still wasn't fixed. Until they fix it, I'm sticking with XP.

I'm running a SB Audigy 2 ZS Platinum, which is outputting 5.1 sound using 3rd party drivers from the kX project: www.kxproject.com

Hell, it even supports ASIO so I can run Reason.

Both my onboard 5.1 and sound card work fine in XP, but not in Vista. It's actually a well documented issue that they are supposed to fix in SP1, but RC 1 doesn't fix it for me.

I'm surprised it even runs that well in the video there. He has a GTX and I have a GT, but my processor is a 6000+ and his is a 3800+, and still seems to run the game better than I do on just high settings.
Defragment etc.?
