So when I navigate my hdd, and try to open program files (by double clicking it) I get the following message:

"This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the Set Associations Control Panel."

I went to the spoken area of the CP, but there's no option to tell a ****ing folder what to do.

I've never heard of something so ridiculously stupid.. a FOLDER needs "file associations" I can't want to reformat back to XP as soon as I get my floppy drive working again (so I can slipstream raid drivers)

I know with windows XP you can open an Explorer window, tools, folder options, and the File Types tab which lists registered file types and their extension. "Folder" is in the list and actions are listed when you hit Advanced, such as Open and Explore. You can set which is the default action for when a folder is double clicked.

Not sure if that is anything like what is happening to you though. I have not got that deep with Vista. lol
And it's odd that it only happens with Program Files. It's probably something a little more specific than what I mentioned above.

Maybe try system restore if you have a previous point that you know of.

Actually it happens with most if not all folders. Appreciate the post very much Asus, thanks, I'll look for an equivalent of that in Vista.

What do you mean by "Tools"? I can't seem to remember where I got to that when I had XP.

On my machine in Windows XP I have File, Edit, View, Favorites, Tools, and Help across the top of the explorer window (windows key + E or My Computer). You might have that bar not being displayed.

"Folder Options" is in my control panel and that is the same thing.

Hmm, seems folder options is completely useless, as is the associations/protocols section. Bleh.
