Just noticed it and installing now. *It's 69.2 MB by the way.

I need to figure out of this fixes the issues Vista has with 5.1 surround. Too lazy to reinstall to find out.

all I got was a defender update when I checked just now

perhaps the 64bit version isn't quite out yet?

I've had 5.1 surround for a while, using the drivers from the kX project

EDIT: I can't find a good url, the site seems to be down at the moment.

checked several times, still nothing... I'd rather get it from windows updates than from the site but whatever.

Well it's a heavily extensive update. I was going to post that there was no difference pre-service pack 1 but decided to review it longer. When I load up anything that has sound though, I can't hear anything. Something in the Service Pack doesn't agree with my onboard Realtek sound card drivers. Great. :dozey: *IMO I see a lot of problems people are posting including this thread I made: http://www.flamehaus.com/bbs/here-vp2946428.html#2946428 I suggest you hold off on it.

I'll also copy/paste the response that someone gave on that issue.

Honestly, SP1 makes Vista a helluva lot better. I highly suggest updating to it.

However, do realize that if it's not showing up in WU it's because it can see that there aren't SP1 compatible drivers for your system yet for some hardware. So if you do a manual install, keep that in mind... I don't think you will have too many troubles unless you are using obscure hardware.

*Edit* Microsoft posted the list of drivers which do not work with SP1 and they are awaiting updates from the manufacturer.

Audio drivers
  • Realtek AC’97 (Alcxwdm.sys and Alcwdm64.sys - version 6.0.1.6242 or earlier)
  • SigmaTel (Sthda.sys and Sthda64.sys - version 5.10.5762.0 or earlier)
  • SigmaTel (Stwrt.sys Stwrt64.sys - version 6.10.5511.0 or earlier)
  • Creative Audigy (Ctaud2k.sys - version 6.0.1.1242 or earlier; P17.sys – all versions)
  • Conexant HD Audio (Chdart.sys and Chdart64.sys - version 4.32.0.0 or earlier)
Biometric (Fingerprint) Sensors
  • AuthenTec Fingerprint Sensor (Atswpdrv.sys – version 7.7.1.7 or earlier)
  • UPEK Fingerprint Sensor (Tcusb.sys driver file – version 1.9.2.99 or earlier)
Display drivers
  • Intel Display (Igdkmd32.sys and Igdkmd64.sys – versions between and including driver 7.14.10.1322 and 7.14.10.1403)
Other drivers
  • Texas Instruments Smart Card Controller (GTIPCI21.sys – version 1.0.1.19 or earlier)
  • Sierra Wireless AirCard 580 with the Watcher.exe application – version 3.4.0.9 or earlier
  • Symantec software driver for Symantec Endpoint Protection and for Symantec Network Access Control clients (Wgx.sys and Wgx64.sys – versions 11.0.1000.1091 or earlier)

Additionally, Windows Update will not offer Windows Vista SP1 to computers together with the Logitech QuickCam that uses the Lvuvc.sys device drivers (all versions). Microsoft has detected a flaw in the Windows Vista Ks.sys file that can cause a critical stop during Windows Vista SP1 installation if this device driver file is installed. An update to Ks.sys is being created that resolves this issue.

When Microsoft has resolved this issue, an update to Ks.sys will be offered to these users. After this update is installed, they will then be offered Windows Vista SP1 by re-checking for updates.

Creative Audigy (Ctaud2k.sys - version 6.0.1.1242 or earlier; P17.sys – all versions)

hmm... does that mean the Audigy 2 zs card I'm using?

looked in my dxdiag and it looks like it.... I'm downloading the standalone pack but I'm hesitant to install it now.

Quick and painless.

I've been using it for 4 hours or so and there have been no problems. There were no incompatibilities or install problems. Everything seems a bit faster (file copies, network file transfers, startup/shutdown).

I also just purchased a 2GB 150x Patriot USB key and with the readyboost improvements, my system wakes up from sleep in a second or so; faster than my monitor gets out of powersaving mode.

It clears the superfetch cache though, so I'll wait a bit before judgeing it all. It's most just a collection of bug fixes, so the best part is probably the time saved when reformatting with a SP1 Disc.

Create a restoration point before installing.

Yup. It's always uninstallable.

Also, there will probably be driver updates from them soon, hopefully. Creative has been fairly shitty in regards to driver support though so don't expect it within the week.

Actually, it looks like Creative has Vista drivers now..

Known issues:

* Applications from the original Sound Blaster Audigy CD will not work with this download.
* Users are advised to use Audio Console included in this download to change speaker configurations.
* This driver does not support the following:
o Decoding of Dolby? Digital and DTS™ signals
o DVD-Audio
o DirectSound?-based EAX games
o Gameports
o 6.1 speaker mode.
* SPDIF passthrough is supported on Vista 32-bit only.

I think I remember now that I used the kX project drivers instead because the control panel is much more comprehensive - has stuff like individual channel level settings, EQ, etc. The Creative drivers, if I recall correctly, are very basic, with almost no configuration utilities at all.

Looks like Windows Update doesn't show SP1 unless you've kept up to date with your drivers.

here is a list of drivers SP1 will see as problematic.

I posted that list above.

And why are people complaining about that? Microsoft has absolutely no control on whether manufacturers make drivers for Vista (they can do a lot of convincing, but they aren't going to make someones drivers for them). By waiting until you have up to date drivers, it ensures that the user has the best possible experience. For those who are going to do it regardless of whether they have updated drivers or not, that's why there are standalone download links. Thus, everyone who wants it, can get it, and the average home user who doesn't know what a Service Pack is, doesn't have to worry about drivers and such.

I had none of those drivers on my computer and SP1 didn't show up so I got the standalone and I had to get rid of the language pack on my computer because it wasn't supported. :frown:

But now its installed and running fine. Not sure what to expect really. Should it be super fast? More stable? etc. I had no real problems with vista so I don't think I will notice much.
