I did a quick check and saw that we do have a visual confirmation when registering for the forums. How are bots still getting around that? Are the advertisements done by actually people who have no life? I'm just wondering what we could do to minimize advertisements/spam. If there is nothing we can to do improve the visual conformation thing, one idea would be to limit URL links in posts until the user has a post count of five or more.

I'd bet the bots are registered by real people, then spam automatically.

IP banning is risky. You don't want to ban some innocent person or a whole college lol. Unless you can prove that the IP belongs to a advertising corporation, I would advise against it.

Well, If someone is spamming, then obviously that is their IP.
And it is spelled, 'Confirmation'
Screw the colleges.

Yeah I noticed the spelling error. Thanks. ;)

There are things called shared and dynamic IPs. How would you feel if you were banned from your favorite place because the ****head that goes to your school was a spammer?

I've a dynamic IP, so if I got IP banned, I would disconnect and then reconnect to thar internet :)

Bots can bypass the word check now. We do have a few other tricks to stop spam bots and we're only letting 1 out of every 40 get through. There are a few real world tits though that spend their time signing up to forums just to post a advert but theres no filters to stop them. Luckily we have a really good moderation team here that delete these posts before many people see them.
