Voice communications in HL2

I got this mad idea.
Imagine this, instead of the whole team hearing u when u press "Talk" only nerby players will hear u! I mean if a dude would stand far away he would bearly hear it like in real world, i know thats possible cuz ive seen that kind of sound in other games (player sound fading out when far away)
So imagine that one button could be "talk" and that would be like u where speaking IRL so u could wisper to squad members and if an nearby enemy is nearby he would hear it to. and the other button could be a team "radio" and all the ppl in your team could hear u!
Cuz i mean with all these grafix, eyes following u and such it would make the game feel sooo damn realistic. omg it would be so cool

just imagine to be able to wisper to your team m8s in the game if u are sneeking in a tight hallway and enemys can appear anytime!
And if u stand still and just listen u could hear other ppl speak and wisper to, what a game feeling huh! If it aint akready like that in HL2 i hope the source engine will make it possible for modders...

I was under the impression that was how it was going to work anyway?

sounds shit to me........
i mean, it would be ok if you could hear them a good distence, and not like 4 feet.
i dont know

that way you'd have people actually talk into their mike rather then whispering.... sweet. I'd scream into my mic "MEDIC".. why not

I'd shout out, "WE'RE OVER HERE YOU STUPID WANKERS!!!"

and then i'd run like hell.

I think UT2004 (hopefully HL2 too) is going to do exactly as you suggest, Comkilla. Does anyone here use voice comms regularly - every time I've tried it there's always one guy who won't shut up, and half of your team mates can't talk and play at the same time, and the whole thing falls a bit flat.

That would be awesome! I did email Gabe and asked him if they will include head-set communication, and he said yes. So, can't wait to see what they do with this feature. :)

I generally only use voice com (either 3rd party progs, or built-in) with friends I know in real life. It's a great concept, the voice-chat, but it's too hard to keep under control. If people go: "Wah wanker! Saw that he killed me with a pistol!" when they die, it kills the realism, and it's annoying when you're playing concentrated. It's allright for clan-matches I suppose (yeah I played CS back in the day, so laugh at me:p).
I do hope they improve sound-quality, it also helps the realism. If your crouched left of another player and he whispers "ok you cover me, i'm going for that truck over there" it should sound as if he's really there next to me. Current HL1 voice comms sound a bit..off, i dunno.

LOL guys... You act like HL2 would be the first game that has that... HalfLife 1 has that feature already... It was implemented with the patch that came right after the one that added voicecom. A variable (serverside) turns on locational voicecom. When I ran a DoD server I always had it on, and people complained, that's probably why it's never used (and why none of you have ever heard of it).

Dude we have heared of it...... infact i play in cs a server where everyone uses it..... did u even read the all the replies?

why not have the option for both radio com and local com? you dont need to talk to the whole team if u want to say something to the person next to you in the game

tHAT IS HOW IT IS SUPPOSED TO WORK IN tEAM fORTRESS 2.

Is there a problem with your caps lock key?

Anyway this is a good idea, but here's another idea: enemy players can also hear you if they're nearby.

I like the idea. Sounds good to me.
Someone said earlier that no one liked it... Could you care to expand your answer abit. Why didn't people like it???

I don't like it. You have to be quite when you'r near enemies and that's lame imo. The voice-com (and team_say) exist so you can speak with friends without anyone else hears. :)

Yes but it would be fun if the enemy could hear you when you yell in your mic, this would prevent players from spamming the mic without giving their positions away.

IMHO Voice-Over-IP Communication is HORRIBLY overrated and utterly useless compared to Push-Button-Team-Commands like in Tribes2.

I have yet to find a public game where voice-comm helped the whole team. Mostly theres either some squeeky 12 year old talking or theres different languages ripping the whole purpose to shreds.

Just give the HL2 Multiplayer a decent VoiceComm like Tribes2 and all will be good.. .

For Clan-Games something like TeamSpeak can be used anyway.

I hate having to push seven buttons just for one voice command, it's much easier to just say it.

most of the time I've played, the only people using voice comm was retarded.. they were just singing and shouting, not actually trying to communicate with the rest of the team

but I could see how a feature like high dB = long distance, low dB = low distance.. only thing is that griefers/lamers/etc would give away the whole team's position, etc

Well, in TF2, the enemy spys might be able to listen in on your teams radio chat, so thats when local chat is needed!! :borg: :borg:

Battlefield has a similar, albeit much simpler, system. The voice binds are seperated into two groups, one of which is a radio that your entire team hears, and the other which is shouted and only nearby players hear. It's sometimes very effective.

ya but that is all typing and speech selecting,
not real voice comm.

Exactly, but it works well enough. Its the same concept without the mike. I do have to say I really liked the T2 one too, just because there was an option for anything.

I remember playing a game of natural selection and this guy was singing;

''poonanny...poonanny...poo''

Over and over in his 12 yr old pre pubescent voice, needless to say i pissed myself laughing and got killed by a little alien bitch.

but will it need greater than 512K connection? or not?

Nah gongonzola, that will be more then enough for voice comm, you can do it on a 56k, just that you'll need to lower the quality.

why give the enemy any chance to hear u at all? ppl would just use the radio chat all the time, unless it's to taunt the enemy, which i think we could do without!
i like the idea of local radio chat though!

Yeah, same here. I would want to just beable to talk to people on my team.

there's always the fine line of when realism is good and when people don't like it.

It seems to me that local voice would be awesome for people playing ghost recon or something that was trying to be very realistic. I don't think most games are like that though...you have to get the kind of people who are sort of role-playing, and all it takes is one l33t asswipe to screw it up...so I'm not sure what I think about it. I like it as an option, though.

i didn't read all the posts in this thread but the simpliest answer i can think of right now is radio communication.. like in CS, u have ur pre-set radio commands and then u have ur mic button.. the idea is, regardless of which way u communicate (through the pre-set commands or by mic button), ur doing it through radio and that is why every team member hears u regardless of their location in the map.

it might be cool to have the feature ur talking about, but in a game like CS2.. its probably understood that radio communication is the choice..
maybe in regular death match the feature ur talking about is implemented but not in every mod that HL2 will support.

What about a combination of hand-signals and a radio where you can only hear people close to you, for super realism (if you planned on making a swat game for example).

That would be cool, wispering down the mic the persons name, looking at them and then they see you doing the hand signals

Hand signals was also another thing thought for Op: CO-IN, but it would take fairly long to access the many hand signals possible.
