Volkswagen > Terrorist

Was posted a few days back. VW are going to sue over it.

My mistake then...a mod can close the thread.

Wait why they suing over it?

Volkswagen is at the centre of a global row after a disturbing film featuring a Palestinian suicide bomber in a Polo car flew around the world on the internet.

Volkswagen said last night it was outraged by the spoof advert, which became the fifth most talked about item on internet weblogs.

The mystery deepened after MediaGuardian.co.uk tracked down the makers of the film, who revealed that some distinctively professional techniques had been used: it had been shot on 35mm film, not something an amateur would usually do, and cost £40,000, not a sum an amateur could afford.

"Lee", who refused to give his surname, apologised for the spoof advert, which he said was released accidentally, but refused to say who funded it. "We made the advert for Volkswagen," said Lee. "We never really intended it for public consumption. It was principally something we made to show people in the industry but it got out somehow. (GUARDIAN, UK)

I found the ad to be controversially funny.

I´ve already seen it a few weeks ago :p
It´s pretty good though!! :D

This is the same thing that happened with those "truth in advertising" shorts a few years back, some ad firm wanting to show themselves to industry insiders made a parody film about the industry. Someone leaked them to the net.

That's hilarious. I heard about this on the news or somewhere, but I didn't see the advert.

Why would they sue over a commercial that they themselves produced?

Or are you saying VW had nothing to do with this?

Did you just skip past Harryz's post?

I would PAY the makers not sue them, If they ran a commercial like that I would buy a Volkswagen.

yeah, me too. I want one so much now. In fact, i might sell my house and live in a Volkswagen.

I too saw this a couple of weeks back, but I split my sides laughing ... What's so controversial about it? It's real life... I think people that are so politically correct to say something like this is wrong need a good old slap round the head with a reality stick.

I never get why stuff like that would cost $40,000. I guess that doesn't include the price of the VW. Surely it's just pointing a camera with your "mate Dave" as the terrorist.

Yeah that's always made me wonder, too. I guess the actors just charge a lot. If I had to film something similar I would be able to get the same effects for under £100.

Really? I thought the angles, the quality of the film and the fairly believable (supressed) explosion were pretty noteworthy. They also avoided the usual problem of filming in a public place- idiots spying your camera and trying to molest it.

I said it another thread, but I really don't think this is that bad. In fact, it's quite clever. But, personal feelings aside, VW have a reputation to live up to...

...wait, they're the company supported and commisioned by Hitler, right? [/endsnide]

It didn't cost 40 grand, just 400 pound. He made it in his spare time.

Great ad btw, but suing the guy only makes VW look bad, don't they realize that?

Even if it cost only £40 000, thats very very cheap for a quality little film.

Haha, that was hilarious. Abit of a touchy matter but hilarious nonetheless.

Wahahahahahaha! That's too great, ahahahahaha...

Volvo should have done an ad like that, because they're known for being strong cars.

OK, so the cynic in me is taking over regarding this add...

Think about it, what's a great way to circulate your advert without paying for spots on television?

1) Make an add that gets "accidently" leaked to the web.
2) Get world wide news coverage when you fake outrage and threaten to sue.
3) With the media talking about the "add that won't air" the entire network of world wide news becomes a commercial for your commercial
4) Watch the torrents fly.

Mission Accomplished. World wide coverage for $40,000.
