Volumetric Light?

Anyone know how to make the light rays like in the dome in Dust or the street lights in Havana?
 
Usually clever texturing and alpha mapping on a static mesh imported from your 3d program of choice.

[edit 2] They're just sprites with a scale of 5+ or so I expect.
 
Yeah, so it is. That's kind of disappointing. This whole time I had thought they figured out a way to use particles to create volumetric light. Oh well.
 
you dont use particals for volumectric... its somthing differnt...
