I am having a problem with my vrad.exe (lighting) when compiling large or complicated maps; when it gets to the lighting part, it takes a while for it to do the lights, then, (unexpectedly), my computer turns off. On its' own. Has anybody come across anything like this or have any ideas on how to enable me to finish these maps?

P.S. It usually happens when i have a fair number of light entities, or one light_environment entity in a large outdoor area.

It sounds like your comp overheats.

Hammer / Your compiling process really works your computer to 100%, making everything involved (Everything but sound, net and graph cards) gets as hot as it can get for the time of your compile. So that's my best guess, that when your compileprocess is "too" long your computer becomes to hot and emergency shutdowns.

It's better today then it was before, anyway, when the comp would just fry ;).

i am having this problem too, i hear there are other tools one can use to speed this process up, i think it was ZHLT, can anyone confirm this, and a link would be nice too. plz

found it, i think, take a look at this.
i hope it helps.

Zoner's half-life tools (ZHLT) is a set of compiling tools for the original half-life and would not work for compiling half-life 2 maps.
As for the original post I think Dead-Inside hit the nail on the head. You could take a can of compressed air and try to blow out any dust inside your case, particularly over the heatsink/fan for your cpu. If this doesn't work you may want to look into some better cooling.

Personally I vaccum my case every now and then to keep it .. well not TOO dusty.

You could also try lowering your CPU frequency in BIOS so that you force it to run lower. Say clocking a 3.0 GHZ intel to run at 2.7 or so might do good.

Right, that may work, but right now i already have my dual 1.8's clocked at 1.5's.

Thanks for the suggestions all! I'll try looking at my case and seeing if i can't blow out some dust, but it's lookin pretty bad right now. Oh well...

P.S. If anyone else has some good ideas i'd love to hear them!

B careful with vacuums if you aren't good with computer tinkering. They can generate a lot of static electricity. I use them though, along w/ canned air.

I GOT IT TO WORK!!!! And my map looks awesome, i'll post it up on this site when i'm finished (work in progress). I got it to compile by putting icepacks all around my computer!! :D :D

Meh, whatever works!
