Vsync; what the heck is it? what does it do? i have a high end system, should i have it on?

Vsync syncs your FPS with your refresh rate ingame.
If your refresh rate is 60Hz then it will limit your FPS to 60FPS.
If your refresh rate is 75Hz then it will limit your FPS to 75FPS.

The idea behind Vsync is to get rid of 'tearing' that occurs when the screen is updated with the next Frame before the monitor is finished drawing the screen (refresh rate). It really stands out when things change/move quickly from Frame to Frame inbetween refreshes.

If your card can't make it to that limit (60, 75 or whatever your refresh rate is) then it cuts the FPS in half to maintain sync.

Vsync on a good system = buttery smooth goodness.

ill have a x800xt on a viewsonic monitor, 19 inch 21horrizontel and 25 vertical. will i have any problems? at 11*76 and 1024x1000 and 1600x1200 the resolutions are abrivitated but will all 3 resolutions run smooth as a babis ass or what? anyhting i should watch out for? what do i really get with vsync on? and whats with the cards refreshrates and hte monitors? i dont get it.

Again, it depends solely on the monitor. In general, leaving vsync on, no matter the system, really doesn't hurt.
What refresh rates does your viewsonic monitor support at the said resolutions? If you have vsync off, and FPS in a game reaches higher than the maximum refresh rate, you'll see image tearing (what looks like parts of the scene separating really quickly.. it's hard to explain, but it can be irritating).

You really shouldn't have to worry about it, with an X800 XT, I'd suggest leaving vsync on.

i think i can do 160ish at 10x7, and around 120 or 100 at 1600x1200 (my favorite reZ). as long as i dont get any video lagg i dont care. im goona have vsync on for beautiful effects. i get what your saying .
