Wait ... WON is gone in 2 weeks, right?

So that means Valve would be pretty confident on Steam holding the load of the millions of people who play HL every day. HL2 release, anyone? I don't know if this went over just my head, because it just "clicked". Sorry if it's painfully obvious.

I think this has been discussed...the general consensus is that WON won't disappear until they're entirely sure Steam can handle it all and they're targeting 2 weeks out for that... I think...

I don't think everyone would want to play it on Steam. What will happen? The regular CS will say that it needs updating when you try to join a server? But you probably won't see any servers... Whatever.

What? WON is going away. The next update for HL1 will make it Steam-dependent. The WON servers will be turned off. You will no longer be able to play HL mods over the internet without Steam.

steam has been running fine for me and everyone else that i've seen playing on it...

I only get the occasional crash and/or error message while using Steam. Not nearly as bad as when Steam was first released.

I know. I think you misunderstood my post.

Lets hope they fix :)

Thats because you don't read posts about people saying how nicely Steam works. You just read the posts about the whiners because they can't get theirs to work right. Mine works fine, always has, and almost everyone I know personally has had no problems.

I still haven't downloaded steam.

I don't like that in order to play SP you have to go through steam, even if you own the game...

You can have custom models, over at cscentral.com I think they had a new posts recently on how to do it...I think Steam is pretty cool, just a lot of updating/downloading. When they get rid of all the bugs, most people will probably end up saying "Steam > WON"

A Note About WON and Counter-Strike 1.5
September 17, 2003, 11:35 am · Chris Bokitch

There seems to be a lot of confusion over the proposed plan to pull the plug on WON. WON will be available until the Steam service is working the way it was intended to. We will not simply pull the plug. If you wish to, you can reinstall Half-Life (if necessary) and play Counter-Strike 1.5 the way you always have.

I hope that eases some fears.

Some of the constructive feedback we've received has been quite valuable, and we're working to create a product that everyone will be happy with.

Do you think they'll use the old WON servers as Steam servers?

The only difference between a WON server and a STEAM server, is the ID. Thats it.
