Was HL2 completed before Sep 30?

I heard this news from somewhere before the Sep 30 deadline and the announcements of delay, somebody from Valve said that the game "is ready and we are just play testing it right now"

Obviously, the game is not 'ready' thus the delay, but what happened there? Why issue the 'game is ready..' statement?

Note: Assuming the delay from Sep 30 to holiday is before the hacking incident and the holiday to april is the hacking incident.

yer they did say they was play testing. but they are still findin bugs so they delayed to make a good release. at least thats wot i think :)

#1 Closing security holes.
#2 Steam.

If the reasons are those, then why issue "game is ready..." statement? It is not ready!

/me thinks we need another interview with valve about the very unclear questions going on around the community.

That statement relates to single player, not the whole package.

That would be as true as the Doug Lombardi statement that HL2 would ship the 30th of September...

Hmm.. Whenever people say game, I'm thinking of the whole game, not parts of the game unless told otherwise. :)

Well if that was the case we'd be playing Half life 2 multiplayer right now, would we :)

I dont think it was ready. all these people sayin the leak was dated 4 days before the 30th and nowhere near done, i dunno I havent seen it for myself but sounds like a solid theory

Assuming the beta is indeed dated 4 days before sep 30, again I must ask why did the valve guy state the game is ready statement?

Publicity? I thought they don't want that until are sure about the game completion. Heck, that's why they spend 4+ years deep underground hiding from press unlike most other game developers. :)

lol...the beta (whatever you wanna call it) it months old - Im sure Valve have got cut-scenes, voicing and maps pretty much sorted....you dont work on a game for 5 years and only create a half ready game

if they just put in sp what about the 56kers who wanna play on there LAN? but cant dl it cuz its a HUGE dl

wut??? SP only is not conducive to LAN play , sorry.

PS- It was ready until some greedy egotistical chump hacked into Valve and mucked things up for thousands. GJ hackers.

The beta isnt all Valve has its all the hackers could reach. Use what I like to call 'common sense' , youll get it.

this confuses me for some reason.

When did the hacking incident happen exactly? September.... I forgot.

Another one of these navel gazing threads? Whether it was or wasn't ready on the 30th doesn't matter much now, the ETA on release is now April 2004 according to the publishers, unless Valve say otherwise. There have been a fair few threads already explaining the significance of the Source Code Hack with regard to delaying the games release, so I won't bother repeating whats already been covered. Suffice to say that the 'beta' information looks like it was stuff specifically written for the E3 movies (so it is well out of date) so I wouldn't believe the hype about it reflecting the games actual condition.

its not what valve has.....the beta... ITs way too bareboned. According to everyone who has it (i dont) its really buggy, gotta do mostly everything through console, missing sounds, no voices, no scripts, no singleplayer order or campaingment, missin Ai, not done levels (not sure how many are undone, i dont have it...but theres 135 in total i think) and not all enemies...etc.... I DOUBT this is what valve fully had 2 weeks ago.the beta CAN"t be what valve had in september

Agreed.

The answer is yes. All that was left was playtesting, ironing out bugs, localization, and probably Steam. Now that it's been leaked, we also have to fix security holes, for authorization, cheating, and Steam.

Seems like a lot to be done in 2 months. But I still believe they can get it out this year.

Nobody knows how complete the game is or what Valve really means when they use words we think we know the meaning of in ways we don't understand.

For instance, while the phrase, "Half-Life 2 is on track for a September 30 release" appears to have a very simple and ovious meaning, Valve in fact meant, "We're behind schedule and will have to delay the release any where from three to six months."

In short, you can't really take Valve at their word, so we'll just have to wait and see.

(Gabe Newell also said the delay had nothing to do with the stolen source code, but is this another case where he is assigning different meanings to common words?)

I certainly don't think the beta was anything like what Valve have completed so far, I mean many months after e3, would you keep the map names as those?

I assume not, which is one of many things which indicate this also.
Certainly even though it hasn't been released you would normally trust Valve over a h4x0r.

the way they've digged steam into itself, its going to be forever, before its good.. just notice steam now, is it all that good? negative, not until steam u get now, is good, i dont think hl2 will be released

stop talking out of your ass

Doug said that they were set for Sept 30 back at ECTS. There's no reason to believe that they weren't. What would he have to gain by confirming the date and withholding the announcement of the delay?

Changes are made all the time. The schedual was probably changed two weeks or so prior to Sept 30th. Sick of going over this again and again.

If I'm not mistaken, an interview conducted a few days (10?) before septermber 30 also highlights gabe's comment on the release date which states that they are indeed on track for september 30 release date. I'll try to find the interview, but I'm sureI read it somewhere.

Well was the interview released, or conducted 10 days ago.

And again, what would Valve gain by lying about it?

I can't think of any. :)

But then, back to my first question, why?

Unintelligent posts should be deleted as well. :)
Don't you think the existence of forums and such is to discuss your ideas?
