a new graphics card.. i know you guys get this kind of stuff all the time.. but oh well

wanted the latest greatest thing from nvidia ( done trying ATI untill their linux drivers get better )

wanted to get the new GTX 280 series. these things look like they could take the graphics equivalent of a train coming head on!

but after looking at some reviews im seeing the 9800x2 's just barely under preform the GTX 280's by very little frames, like no more then 10, which is something i can live with.. not to mention they are less then half hte price of most of the GTX 280's.

the only problem i saw was that the only 9800x2 at new egg only has a 90 day limited warranty, which is strange because its a EVGA which usually have life time warranties, and i would really like to try to get a card that has a life time warranty on it because my last card died due to no fault of my own. ( i have no idea what went wrong with it because some times it would work and some times it just wouldnt )

so what do you think? the GTX 280 from EVGA? or the 9800x2 from EVGA with the limited warranty? or maybe even a GTX 260?

GTX260 or 280. The 9800GX2 seem to over heat easy and break. Which means a lot of people end up buying a GTX280 anyway.

If you have an SLI board maybe consider 2x 8800GT or 2x 9800GT (same thing, updated name). Would be more reliable than a 9800GX2.
There is a 8800GTS (G92) 512MB on newegg for <135.

i only want one card.. dont really want to jump into SLI.. think im going to try the 260. the 280's are a bit more then i really want to spend and the only 9800Gx2's newegg has are out of stock.. the 260's are looking good right about now seeing as i decided with my monitors resolution only reaching 1440x900, i dont need the most expensive card to run max settings.

I would recommend a eVGA 9800GT.

At $125 I think it is one of the best bang-for-the-buck cards going on right now.

Just put one in a friends rig. Runs L4D butter smooth 1680x1050 w/ 2x AA 16x AF E7200 @ Stock and 2 gigs budget ram.

Of course, if you have no problem spending more, by all means. =D

Mind you that the 9800gt is utterly equal to the 8800gt. If you find an 8800gt for a lower price, it's a better deal. Another good deal for a GTX 260 is the XFX GTX 260+ black edition. It runs at a higher clockspeed and performs almost as well as a stock GTX 280.

Get a EVGA Core 216 GTX 260. Overclock it a bit and it will run as well as a GTX 280.

i got my dad a evga 9800GT for christmas, he hadnt installed it yet so we'll see how that runs.. but i want something higher then that ( bragging rights mostly ) I'd really like to get one of those 4870x2 's but i would need a bigger PSU i think, plus i dont need to spend that kinda money :P

260 is looking good right now then.. found a BFG for 289 at newegg.. think im gonna go with that one :D

BFG are the kings, that should come with a 10 year guarantee too.

I'd go with an EVGA card instead. Lifetime Warranty and their support is great. Forums and everything. RMA's are quick and you may even get a better card in return. You also have 90 days to trade in the card towards a better one if you want.

I just ordered an eVGA GTX260 (one of the 216 core editions). I'm psyched as hell to put it in my box, but I'm a little nervous I'm going to run into power problems. I have a 500W PSU (stock from my case) and that fits the minimum power requirements, plus nothing else is guzzling too much power (no quadcore or anything), so I'm hopeful. Still, I have a funny feeling that when my card gets here in about a week I'm going to end up ordering a new power supply.

500w is the minimum. I'd get a proper aftermarket PSU if i were you. They are not that expensive. Go with OCZ. Again, quality products and great support.

well i was looking into one of those evga GTX 280 but i read a lot of people had some artifact problems with that card. I alway saw EVGA as "vaule" hardware.. see at its the majority of what best buy carries :P

and a 10 year warranty on the BFG should be more then enough for that card.. in 10 years that card should cost no more then 13 dollars and 52 cents.

"Value"? Far from it. Don't mistake accessibility for value. Best Buy sells BFG products too. So,not much of an argument there. Anyway,i have no experience with BFG's products and their policy/customer service. EVGA's policy, however, is pretty lax when it comes to overclocking their cards and their customer service has yet to disappoint me.
