Was Valve aware that the computers are old?

kleiner just digs the refresh rate of those bitchin' crts.
Damn right. Check out the separate RGB connections on the back of that monitor, it's probably a high quality one. And if you look carefully you can see he uses a MX510 mouse, choice of all pro-gamers.

Also, he's going to get himself back problems standing like that. That's probably why he maybe invented the gravity gun - to fetch himself a damn chair.

That's what the giant lens is for. He's far-sighted and needs that mother to still be able to see anything on screen while sitting down.

Kleiner thinks that fixed resolution monitors are teh suXX0r..

EDIT: it's from the kleiner lab bink

1. Power Cable
2. Standard 15 pin vga connector
3. Connector for built-in speakers :)

Clever thought, but I don't think any of those looks like a VGA connector. I'm sticking with my R, G, B, cable theory which you'd more likely get in a Sun/etc workstation.

I can't believe we're even discussing this. And even worse, I started it :E

I like the theory too, It makes the monitors look so much older...
For a group of people who worked hard on the graphics...the keyboards aren't up with everything else(Now I'm being picky)

perhaps it's a super awesome improved moniter that has CRT bulkiness, but is much crisper.

if it were in the future.

They don't look that old to me. I mean, how different do monitors look now? They have spoilers, fins, and exhaust pipes? They actually look very similar to the monitors in that picture.

It's only ten years + from Black Mesa (which we can assume took place sometime now, as the manual says "200-" for his employment letter)

Add to that the conditions they are in, would have been 0 tech advancements almost since the date of the invasion.. they'd be using the same stuff as now, if they could even get a hold of that in City 17!

If it's based in an Eastern European nation then that kind of tech is probably all they could afford. I think it's simply a result of being an underground rebel group salvaging what they can. Would you expect the Combine to give them access to the latest, greatest technology?

If you look at the computers in this Picture the computer are old school, The monitors look like a 94 modal I had back in the day, and for a story that is based in the future they're computers look a lot like ours.... :p

that orange thing going to be my resovoir for my watercooling
orange water
and hl2 window ^^
does anyone known where you can get such big resovoir?

:p
i just like that pic i wish there was a bigger one
16x af 6x aa
1600x1200 :)

Yeah, the original manuals for HL had it set somewhere in the first decade of the 21st century, and I'm pretty darn sure several previews and interviews with the VALVe guys have stated that it's now ten years further on, so it's pretty much the near future...

With the Combine, whoever they turn out to be, in control, I'd say the advance of human technology probably halted completely for everyone but Breen and the Resistance dudes... and the Resistance have to scrounge. I wouldn't be surprised if we see stuff even older than 1994-style monitors in the game...

Its eastern europe, not western europe or america.
Doesn't mean you can't buy any in easertn europe, you can buy everything if you have enough money but as people pointed out already, its probebly alot easyer to find those crt monitors.
Who says there ain't lcd's in the game either ? :)

Its 10 years after HL, but when was HL? HL2 can be now and HL1 can be 10-20 years ago :) (and if that isn't acceptable, there is a real 5 years time difference between hl1 and hl2 :p )
Hmm they should not have printed a date in the manual :)

Im still using my CRT now and plan to continue doing so for as long as it lasts then getting the spare one from the loft.

my dads got a lcd one and to be frank... they are shit for gaming.

you get shadows if something moves fast enough.

If you try and look at anything in detail or use an LCD monitor for anything other than word processing the results are quite shiet, it's all blury and shadowy and wierd.
So if they want to be able to see anything detailed they have to use CRT monitors.

Wonder if they're still using Windows.
Hey there's an idea, maybe it's Bill Gates behind the invasion.

I'm pretty sure they did print a date in the manual, and it was 200-.

And I'm damn sure it's official that HL2 is at least ten years after HL.

I thought it had been 30 years since. Don't know why i thought that though, it was either 30 or 3 or something else(just to leave it open).

yes that computer must be outdated or old or whateva since thats all the resisstance could get thier hands on but there still are high tech comps so this pretty much proves that HL2 will be in the near future from 2004,maybe somewhere around 2010-2015?

I'd say it's pretty obvious the the rebels have to scrounge whatever they can get...the gauge on the manipulator is held on with duct tape, for pete's sake!

And, I'm guessing that the time passed in Gordon's world will be the same as the time that has passed for us since we last saw Gordon at the end of HL. After all...YOU ARE GORDON FREEMAN!

holy crap you're right!
and the monitors are black and green. Now that's old school! :afro:

I hope to god the first pic is the actual gameplay one because in the bink pic the lab just looks bland. (no carpet, boo!)

0mg why t3h h3ll 4int d3y g0t t3h ub4r hol0graph PC m0nit0rz0z0zzzz

has it ever occured to you that those scientists are 1. on the run from the combine, 2. can get gunned down any second, 3. don't have enough, or any $$ at all to go online and order some leet LCD screens. obviously you've never used your brain, or know "Nineteen Eighty-Four" which the game pinches a bit of juice from.

i heard that gaming is better on a crt anyways (cant remember the source)

Yeah, I bet Dr. Kleiner had that in mind when he got that monitor.

Didn't read all the thread, but there is a TFT monitor in that pic, look directly above the CRT monitor, in the shadows.
