We are soon to know about MP

I'll remain the sceptic and say just becasue someone asks questions doesn't mean they'll get answers.

Counter-Strike Source

When Gabe Newell exclusively told our staff that Counter-Strike Source will be the multiplayer game for HL2, people are still asking, "What is source?" Source is Valve's latest update for Counter-Strike. "Source" is named after the HL2 Engine. Counter-Strike Source is the new upcoming HL2 multiplayer. In addition, Team Fortress Classic, and Day of Defeat will also port to source. Just imagine these games with 2004 graphics and physics (which some of you have seen from the aztec HL2 demo). Get ready, it's coming soon!

Sounds like they got confused, this 'news' is from ages ago and they're just reposting it now, and misunderstanding like many others that think CS: Source will be Half-Life 2's Muliplayer.

I think HLRadio know just as much as we do about the situation

HL2 doesn't have any multi-player. They're gonna include CS:Source to keep people from complaining too much, but I have a feeling VALVe didn't spend any time at all on the multi-player aspect of HL2. It's dissapointing, but that's my speculation on the topic.

If you look at their history of games though... Half-Life has always been the single-player game. VALVe never really did make a big deal of multi-player games unless it was a mod they bought out and added to their stock.

Another possibility is that TF2 is going to be their main push for the multi-player community. Perhaps, like id did with Quake 3, they are going to make TF2 focus strictly on online gaming, and leave HL2 for single-player fun and other mods.

Here's all I know about TF2: At one point, Lombardi or Gabe mentioned a plan to release TF2 6 months after HL2 was released. It has also been stated that TF2 is taking on a more sci-fi theme this time, and is CLOSELY RELATED to the storyline and time-period of HL2. Sounds like TF2 should be included with HL2 for online gaming, but it's a fact that TF2 will be a stand-alone game.

Unfortunately we've got to play the same damned CS maps over and over and over and over again for another 3 years. You'd think they'd at least make an official map pack for the new CS:Source, but they probably don't have time.

How I see the situation:

We don't know if HL2 alone has MP or not.
CS:Source is not "the" MP. Whole HL1 + some official mods will be converted. We don't know for sure if this will be shipped with HL2 or something else.

MP side has been very important for Valve and it was a huge deal from the beginning (considering how famous Quake Team Fotress was). After getting HLDM and TFC to a playable condition they started on TF2 (but obviously their plans changed later).

HL2 as a game will most likely be almost 100% SP only. Maybe some DM, but who knows.
TF2 (and CS2?)will most likely be almost 100% MP. With the exception of some training missions and the traditional botfights, but who knows again...

HLRadio said they will go into more depth about the gameplay of multiplayer and what the "source" engine really is. Hopefully, we get some new news. You can be ready to tune in here at 8PM EST. Anyone know what time that is for the West Coast of USA?

if we would really get some new info, i would be happy

May not be relevant but I recall a official statement that mentioned HL 2 would come in a couple of choices, basically a SP only ver. , a SP/MP ver and a Special ED. (SP/MP).

Assuming thats correct, one can assume that the MP and SP sides of HL 2 are not particularily intergrated, this gives me the impression that the MP component is not merely some maps with DM code in it (HL 1 MP was DM maps with limited DM code), it must be worth something to add value (unless Valve believe access to MP mods is enough to add to the cost).

Now if Valve don't want to make HL 2 MP just maps with some DM code, they would either a) have to spend time making a fully fledged MP component with enough variety to qualify as not 'mere maps and DM code' or b) upgrade a current popular MP mod to be fully capable of using the Source engine enhancements - most popular mod by numbers.... CS.

I am pretty convinced CS:S is the MP component of HL 2.

Hmm another HL 2 MP theory, oops :p

Not trying to stomp on you or anything but i know tons about TF2. I dont remember them ever saying to release it 6 months after HL2...all we know is that it's in finishing stages. TF2 has not been said to be in a sci-fi theme, and not one word about the story. I personally agree with you about it being included in with HL2..why? TFC was the biggest online port of HL when it came out and now its dying away. They should include it with HL2 or right after to make it big again before they even dare to put out CS2 or even CS:S for that matter. Now i dont know where you have gotten this information but trust me, ive researched tons because im a HUGE fan.

i thought Valve said TF2 would be a standalone retail product.. its been mentioned here many times...

i am confused now.. :|

I didn't say it was coming with HL2, i said it would be nice. As of now and its been stated that its stand-alone. Valve could just suprise us or whatever their plans tend to be, it's just wishful thinking.

They've never proved to be a reliable source. CS:Source isn't THE multiplayer of HL2.

im hoping cs-source isn't the only MP as a mapper. im sure as hell not going to make maps for CS.

Ach gad, did you say the same after HL came out? No, i think not, because CS didn't even exist. CS is a MOD. A MOD. Why on earth do you think you'll be stuck for things to make maps for?

Man, this subject has been beaten to death. But what's one more punch...? Seriously, MP is almost certainly going to be something completely different from CS and TF2. Valve has already said those would be separately available and have not committed to them being HL2's MP. Why would they? They are thematically distinct from the HL universe. They have nothing to do with Gordon Freeman, Combine, etc. HL2's MP will incorporate elements of the SP design, characters, etc. It doesn't make sense otherwise. Plus, awhile ago Gabe said the MP was something really cool and unique and that he plays it every day. Does that sound like CS:S?

Gossoon is completely right. We are almost sure that the HL2 "REAL SECRET" multiplayer with be something like the original. Picking your character, physics incorporated, the weapons, awesome maps, team deathmatch, and i bet they have even done something new and different. Although TF2 is going to rock my F***ing world.

i didnt' say i thought id be stuck, i said im HOPING i wont be stuck making maps for CS.

*checks kirkburns forehead for fever*

Tokin: I'm a bigger fan of TF2 than you! so nananana! Just kiddin'!

I actually read this information recently. I tried doing a search on these forums, but the search function is horrible here (no offense webmasters.) I seriously doubt if TF2 will be released exactly 6 months afterwards, but they said they were planning on releasing it not too far behind HL2.

As far as the sci-fi theme and it's relation to HL2... that's definately been talked about before (I think on this forum.) Like you said, there wasn't ANY story info given, just that it's tied into the world of HL2. Also, some people were able to find out some bits of information from the leaked code. I never saw the stuff myself, but there was mention of "siege towers" which could be used in the game.

It's good to see another TF fan around. I never got into TFC (too silly!), but I was an old quakeworld maniac for the stuff. We even made t-shirts with our clan logo on them :) I'm gonna keep searching for the quotes on this subject, because if you're like me, it's hard to just take someone's word for it without a direct quote form the source (no pun.)

Yep, well all i know is that TF2 is going to be entirely different than TFC and its going to kick the crap out of cs source and hopefully CS2.

Valve would have to be very stupid to release HL2 as single player and then release TF2 or something as its multiplayer sold seperately. They would have to completely ignore how badly it screwed over Unreal 2 :D

My ultimate fantasy is a brand spanking new original HL2 multiplayer, Humans vs Combine, with flying vehicles, maybe those manatee things for combine, and some sort of gyrocopter for humans, with a gunner onboard too.

Big open areas, bullets flying all over the place, buggies flying by. Aaaaaah I can see it all now. Shame it may never happen. But let's keep our hopes up - they've kept it quiet for a *reason*!

no one really knows whether it is actually taking place or not.

HL2 has an MP mode --> confirmed by Valve
TF2 is MP only --> confirmed by valve

:x :bonce:

Isn't it past the time of the show now? What did they say?

They talked about animal genitalia and naked people. (This is the truth, sad reality)

Thats actually a pretty cool idea. Sort of like Halo multiplayer but 10 times better?

I think the 64 thousand people playing cs right now would disagree with you.

whu r u talking bout i was talking about halflife two. but halflife one multiplay was s0 lam3 2 almost no 1 plays it. counterstrike doesnt count it was made by fans not valve its sad when the fans mak3 a multipla game that is 100x better than valve can.
