a lot has been said about Ronald Reagan lately. Much has been said about his diplomatic prowess, his statemanship, his great leadership that brought down the berlin wall. There's another side to Reagan, one that has been all but ignored in the press lately. He was more than a little paranoid, consulted astrologers, fabricated stories, and almost brought us to the brink of armageddon on 2 seperate occasions.

Reagan had a tendency to make up stories:

"Yet, Reagan had a hard time distinguishing fantasy from reality – twice telling Israeli leaders that he helped liberate Nazi death camps when he spent the war in Hollywood. Even Newsweek’s recent hagiography admits: “He invented stories and then believed them. He thought trees produced pollution, confusing carbon dioxide with carbon monoxide. Welfare was bad because of a mysterious Chicago ‘welfare queen’ who drove a Cadillac while on relief.”

Reagan harried the soviets who thought he was preparing for war:

"Reagan was a commonplace nut, but one with his finger on the big red button. In 1984, he said on live radio that he had signed legislation outlawing Russia, announcing, “We begin bombing in five minutes.”
The Soviets responded to this “joke” by putting their nuclear forces on alert."

"Cold War historian Martin Walker writes that by 1983, “Reagan’s loose talk about fighting and winning nuclear war” had so frightened the Soviets that they believed a NATO exercise that November was “in fact not an exercise at all but an actual Western nuclear strike against the Soviet Union.” During the exercise “the Soviets put their military forces on alert and prepared for a Western strike.”

Are we really at the mercy of one person? can there really be a "red button" that can launch armageddon? What do you all think...will the end of the world come about quickly? (Reagan with his finger on the red button consulting astrological charts) Or will it come about slowly in a less direct way...through the destruction of the enviroment? Nostradamus predicted that armageddon would be brought about by one man; the man in the blue turban...I think he meant the man in the Blue Stetson

i think that the topic wasn't related to ..umm..this. Was it?? :O yeah, keep it up ;thumbs up;

huh?

"we begin bombing in 5 minutes" is something Reagan said to the soviets

He was mentally ill even at the time of his presidency? I know he was a bit looney but not to this extent.

"We will begin bombing in five minutes" is something Reagan said in the oval office right before an address while he was unaware the mic was on.

Regan: "My fellow Americans, I am pleased to tell you that I have just signed a bill that outlaws the Soviet Union forever. We will begin bombing in five minutes."

wtf? He was the worst Cold War president of the lot! With anyone but Gorbachev in power in the USSR things would have been royally screwed up because of his attitude.
Diplomatic prowess?! Yeah that 'evil empire' speech was well-advised... certain to lower tensions...

It actually makes me want to pull out my hair when people go on about him 'ending the cold war' etc. A monkey could have done that if it had been elected instead of Ronnie, possibly a lot quicker and without contributing to a military coup in the USSR. Sure it turned out for the best in the end... but things were dodgey for a while.

The only reasons such good things have been said about him is because he died, and he happened to be in power when Gorbachev's policies ended the Cold War.

Those lies from Reagan don't really surprise me, I've never held him in high regard (duh). :)

Bottom of the page.

For someone who seems to be questioning Ronal Reagans effectivness as a president you dont seem to know much about him.

As you can hear in the background from the MP3 you linked, most people standing around him found that that quote quite funny.

I think he was kinda "out of the loop" but his "fantasies" did managed to make the S.U. tremble and fall. (it was already ruined, but he made it shake a little)

Wow, this is really old. He was obviously joking when he said it and didn't know the mic was on.

I never said it wasnt a joke..in fact if you look at the top of the page you'll see that even the person I quoted mentioned it was a joke...still it helped illustrate my point

So you are criticizing him for making a joke?

The author you quoted put quotes around the word joke. That means he dosent really think its a joke and is trying to make it sound more sinister than it really is.

It doesnt illustrate your point at all because it only shows how the Soviets over reacted to a joke with obvious laughter in the background.

omg...this thread is not about reagan!!! it's about how close we have come to nuclear war. How one person can affect the lives of every living organism in the world. Reagan was used because he was seen by many as a little bit of a nut...a nut who had his finger on the "red button"

I think the quotes around "joke" wer meant to convey the inappropriateness of the joke...not whether he was serious or not. Reagan used intimidation and scare tactics on the soviets..he had them jumping at shadows

Well, when you make, or quote, dubious statments about your example, poeple are bound to take exception to it.

Using solid examples that dont stretch or bend what really happened would be a good start if you dont want this to happen.

"we begin bombing in 5 minutes" wasnt the only example I gave...it just made a good topic title

The mic was not supposed to be on.

Your saying Reagan joke was inappropriate when it was not supposed to be heard by anyone outside the room?

It was 50% of the examples you gave of him "bringing the world to the brink". You dont have much of a case without it.

There have been close calls during every presidency so the Soviets aleritng thier nuclear foces while Reagan was in power was nothing special.

In 1995 the russian thought a small Norwegian meteorologic rocket was a U.S.A. nuclear attack. Yeltsin had the keys in the football and ready to launch when the missile went down out of Russia.

that's how close we came.

There have been other examples too.

A Soviet radar station once deteced a massive number of "missiles" comming over the horizon. Standard procedure was to alert the president and launch the missles in such a contingency. The radar operator decieded to wait to see if it was really an attack.

It turns out all they were detecting is plasma in the upper atmosphere caused by a coronal mass ejection.

An Amereican radar station once detected a Soviet missle attack comming over the north pole. They decided to check with other radar stations and after a few frantic minutes they found they had left a training radar tape in the machines accidentally.

lol
but in those cases it was "errors", there was no true threat. In 1995 there was several confirmations, and they were going to launch when the missile feel apart on the Ocean.

shit, that makes it perfectly alright.
you people argue about the stupidest things. honest to god. i'm ready to leave this goddamn place.

"In May 1981, in response to President Reagan's aggressive talk about nuclear war, the Soviet Union instituted the RYAN (Nuclear-Rocket Attack) program, which created a "heightened state of intelligence alert, instructing all foreign stations to conduct a constant watch for tell-tale signs of the buildup to a Western nuclear strike.

In 1983 the RYAN program and Soviet paranoia over an American nuclear attack reached a new peak with the Soviet shooting-down of a Korean airliner that strayed into Soviet airspace over a top-secret missile warning installation in early September 1983. The shooting down of this commercial airliner was in part caused by increasing Soviet anxiety over what they considered an "imminent American nuclear attack." The Soviets believed that the November 1983 NATO exercise, Able Archer 83, designed to practice "command coordination" for a NATO nuclear attack, was in fact not an exercise at all but an actual Western nuclear strike against the Soviet Union. During this NATO exercise in November, the Soviets put their military forces on alert and prepared for a Western attack. Few Americans at the time realized how President Reagan's loose talk about fighting and winning nuclear war had frightened the Soviets and pushed the world toward the brink of nuclear war."

"In May 1982, the New York Times revealed that President Reagan had committed the United States to fighting a protracted nuclear war--lasting up to six months. "A war in which the U.S. could prevail and force the Soviet Union to seek earliest termination of hostilities on terms favorable to the United States."
_New York Times, May 1982"

"In March 1982, the Reagan Whitehouse engaged in a simulated worldwide nuclear war game. The game ended with a full-scale nuclear exchange between the U.S. and the Soviet Union. Reagan had news of this game and its result given the the press "to make sure the Soviets knew the U.S. was ready."
New York Times, Spring 1982"

"There is no alternative to war with the Soviet Union if the Russians do not abandon communism."
Richard Pipes, Top Reagan adviser, 1981"

Ummm I don't know about you, but to me, nuclear war and millions dead is no joke. Bombing is not a joke, if you think its funny to drop bombs, some of which (especially in the past, technology has improved a little) miss their target, killing innocent men women and children... Well then your sense of humor is very, very morbid. :upstare: Its even more critical when your the person who "controls" if and when to drop the bombs, and make the decisions to go to war.

Not only did I think it was a joke, I found it ****ing hilarious.

Well i think its safe to say that for the relatively brief moment in history, most of man kind was nearly wiped out...So lets call it a day and all go out to celebrate our still being alive :D \o/

it's hilarious until it happens to you.
i'm done. no wonder so many people end up leaving these boards. the complete and utter stupidity is just too rampant.

I found what he said funny, but I don't think a real nuclear attack is funny. Kind of like on scare tactics when they scare the shit out of somebody, it is hilarious but it wouldn't be funny if it was real.

And what do you mean until it happens to me? WTF is it? When someone makes a joke to me? I would find it equally funny.

lol not28.. i know what you mean. it really has become a pile of shit recently hasn't it? the OT forum is just a bunch of morons posting links to their web-based opinions anymore.. it used to be funny to laugh at, but it's pretty tired now.

I've been here a little over a month and even I noticed that every single topic that even remotely talks about politics gets bogged down in little nitpicking by page 2. So much so that no one seems to even read anybody elses post; they just latch on to one statement and spend the next 5 pages arguing the same point over and over

lol timmy' you and your avatar are the only thing that keep me coming back
