Last night Spike TV's Video Game Awards were announced. Sadly due to the much higher coverage and much larger fan base console games have, Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas scooped the Game of the Year award.[br]
[br]
However, not quite a consolation on missing Game of the Year, Half-Life 2 walked away with two awards that are very well deserved.[br]
[br]
In the Best Graphics cateogry, Half-Life 2 beat both Halo 2 and Doom 3 to the winning spot.[br]
[br]
More satsifying however is the fact that Half-Life 2 also beat Doom 3 and The Sims 2 to the Best PC Game award.[br]
[br]
Over the next few months there will be hundreds of publications declaring their Game of the Year, will Half-Life 2 get 50 like its predecessor?[br]
[br]
Watch this space...

Oh stop being a pissy foo. :D

Anyways, well deserved awards. Paper Mario Thousand Year Door got the IGN 2004 Best RPG for Gamecube award, which I was happy about because the game is one of the most addicting games ever. I'm currently at 22 hours of playtime and I still need two more Crystal Stars.

Actually, it was GTA: SA that won Game of the Year.. but either way, halo 2 and GTA are no match for HL2. The awards were the biggest joke ive ever seen.

Just because you love 1 doesn't mean you can't respect 2 ;)

There's another thread on this topic where I said this (repated here for the benefit of all mankind... I keeed! I keeed!):

I watched both Spike's VGA and Gphoria last year, innagural years for both of them. I found both to not only be media whores for console games, but based less on any kind of academic analysis of the games and more of a pandering to the numbers generated by unit sales.

However of the two of them, I found Spike's picks to be the least in line with what I personally thought were good games. I also felt like Spike was less "gameresque", and for that reason I gave Gphoria's picks more legitimacy.

What we need is an acedemic body like the Motion Picture industry has to evaulate these games.

yea, GTA:SA won game of the year...

I think it deserved it much more then halo 2.

Screw Spike TV. It's all a bunch of redneck date-rapists on that network anyway.

"Best Graphics" and "Best PC Game" are nothing to sneeze at. I never expected Half-Life 2 or any PC game for that matter to come out on top in a popularity contest when going head to head with the console market, so I'm not that disappointed that it didn't take the overall award.

me either. I was hoping Valve would get mentioned or atleast get some credit. But as you guys saw VU the publisher was there to except awards for its games. Which i think is really kinda lame. French bastards.

wow also another note: Me cant believe chronicles of Riddick got a better review than hl2 on gamespot. They couldn't tell a good game if it slapped them in the face.

GAMESPOTS AWARDS START THIS WEEKEND TOO READ HERE: http://www.gamespot.com/news/2004/12/14/news_6115069.html

get ready for another biased console award show.

If I'd compare HL² and GTA:SA, I must say I had >more< fun playing GTA. HL2's fun was better but much much much shorter.

LoL how can you say that? Including hl2 deathmatch, cs source, hl2 the regular game, and soon dod source not to mention all the other mods and levels people can create. Hl2 will never get old in my eyes and i dont think it's fun has yet to be over for awhile.

Yeah I have a feeling that HL2 will outlast all of them due to the simple fact that you can MOD it. That in and of itself makes it the best game.

Who are you talking to?

And yes I agree, I believe it is quite an accomplishment being among all the console titles.

i figured this is what would happen, more people play console then pc games. If the fan base was the same i think HL2 would have won at least best first person shooter.
Also, i dont care what other people think, HL2 is the game of the year for me.

This is Spike TV afterall. Last year, when everyone else on earth gave Game of the Year to "Knights of the old Republic" they gave it to "Madden football".

I guess their scorn should be badge of honor. Like being named "worst show" by the PTC or something.

The award isn't for expansions or mods or anything. Just for the game. The singleplayer experience. You can say that HL2 will have mods and stuff in the next years, but almost each year there is a new GTA title too.

If you just compare the games without the extra stuff, GTA:SA beats it hands down. the singleplayer is waaaaaay longer and all the extra stuff.. well, I'm still not done after all these months. But HL2 on the other hand... I have barely touched it after I finished it twice and played around with hammer n spawn commands and such. (not including the multiplayers)

you are right

the mods of HL2 are not part of the game even if they use the same engine

Bah.

SpikeTVs are like the Golden Globes, which has been described as the only awards show out there that can still be bought.

I'll pay attention if they make it to 10 years. If the format hasn't changed, I won't watch it, but I will pay attention to the winners list.

I don't think Half-Life 2 should have won the best graphics award. I think that goes to Doom 3. I mean, seriously folks. Half-Life 2's great, but they specifically lowered the bar a bit with their graphics in order to have wider system support. I don't even think Half-Life 2's art direction was necessarily any better either. Plot? Probably better. Gameplay? Definitely better. Graphics? Please, don't kid yourself.

Also, Half-Life 2 will almost certainly get 50 game of the year awards. There are so much more game coverage and review organizations than there were last time around that it won't be very hard.

That's your opinion, Mine is that Doom 3 was a game with dark enviroments with a bunch of really shiney models. Nothing special. HL2 looks a lot more realistic and blows it away.

You can't make an accurate opinion about whether GTA:SA deserved GoTY or whether HL2 deserved GoTY because you've only played one of those games.

I, however, played both. And I feel that Half-Life 2 is more deserving of the title. I'm not saying GTA:SA is a bad game, because it isn't. It's by far the best console game of the year and I enjoyed it immensly. I just enjoyed Half-Life 2 better.

Hey, maybe when you've played HL2 you'll be able to have an opinion that counts?

err....I am banned now?

Half Life 2 will certainly win a bunch of awards later on. No doubt about it.

I dunno, I was too busy trying to distinguish between all these different shades of black to notice that the graphics were actually great. Seriously, even when you were in the other dimension with all the flames around you still couldn't see squat...

Admittedly, the very few times when you get to actually see something, the graphics were really good :)

Doom3 had GREAT graphics admittedly, but it should NOT win for exactly the reason you listed -- the Doom3 engine was not able to scale itself well for lower end systems, and even chugged somewhat on high end systems -- Half Life 2 is playable and beautiful on old and new systems. Yes, you lose some water shinys and other things on an old DX7 card, but you can play and it still looks great (My friend has a gforce MX card, which I would have thrown in the trash a while ago, but he can still play HL2 and it looks really good -- he cannot play Doom3 and have it look good tho). Nice graphics only count if players can see them... If the majority of gamers have to turn down the visuals just to get the game to run, then it does not matter to them how good it COULD look, only that it will look like crap for them. And this is not even touching on the lighting issues of Doom3, which used lights for mood, but often forced areas to be TOO dim, just to try to scare the player (which failed for me most times). In my book, HL2 has the best graphics I have EVER seen.

sigh the only big inprovments i saw in san andreas is the size of the complete map in total and the new features ex. customizing your car, hair, gym blah blah blah...All these things arn't "ground breaking features" but it does give it a slight edge from its predecessor. Other than that it's cut and dry the same game as Vice City with a different story.

I love shutting people up in the gamespot thread. Riddick vs Hl2 = no comparison.

http://forums.gamespot.com/gamespot/show_messages.php?board=314159267&topic=18073029&page=11

negron at hl2fallout thinks hl2's rating at gamespot is a suitable rating and so is Riddicks? I say Gamespot is bs and there whole rating system is lame and unprofessional.

www.gamerankings.com for the true rating.

Half-Life 2 won the Best Graphics award because it's the currently the best looking game on the market. While Doom 3's shadows look nice and are technically impressive, the graphics overall are actually rather bland. Try playing Doom 3 with shadows disabled and you'll see what I'm talking about.

I really think the guys at rockstar deserve the win. They put so much time in their games, going location scouting, always adding new elements, and the gameplay is some of the longest out there (around 40 to 70 hours to get 100%).

Now the same can be said about half life 2, but i agree, the awards were a bit biased. EA took up 85% of all titles at the show.....

ALL of these types of award shows on TV that cover both console and PC Games are biased. They have to be, or the console games would never win any awards -- essentially a console will always be less than a neutered PC with a 1 year old GFX card, and any game that can be made for a console CAN be made better for a PC (although not every developer takes advantages of the differences, and direct ports from console to PC generally suck).
