Diverse Anti-war Protests Largest in DC Since Vietnam

Estimates of the demonstration's size ranged from 100,000 to 300,000 protesters. Participants from across the country spent long hours riding overnight on buses and in caravans to take part in the largest anti-war event the nation's capitol has seen since the Vietnam War era.

Now here is the punch line:

http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,170344,00.html

About 400 people gathered near a stage on an eastern segment of the mall, a large photo of an American flag serving as a backdrop. Amid banners and signs proclaiming support for U.S. troops, several speakers hailed the effort to bring democracy to Iraq and Afghanistan and denounced those who protest it.

To be honest I'm suprised they could even find 400 people. I wonder if the regular pedestrians were counted :).

I saw it those fuggers made me mad ,buncha dicks

"OMG bring our troups home"

"free the cuban 5" that pissed me off the most

most of those were probably PW members ..they were staging a counter protest

about the numbers ..I thought the protest a few days before the invasion back in 2003 was the largest since vietnam ...I cant remember figures but worldwide the number was over 30 million ..cant remember if new york or san fran had 1 million attendees

You are right, I belive the article was just talking about Washington DC (I'm not sure how many people showed up there before the invasion).

The members for the counter protest were all from freerepublic.com ; a sad group of people. Just like Lemonking they have no clue of what goes on in the world around them.

Here is the sad part, Fox News didn't report on the rally with 300,000 people but they reported on the 400. Other media outlets were similar; C-Span gave equal time to the 400.

oh really I stated my opinon about that protest, all it was, was bashing of the Goverment an talk about freing Cummnunist spys and,the only thing I agree with is the things they said against Israel

ugh ..while not as looney as PW they do have their share of nutcases

Again, you are clueless. The "Cuban five" had won an appeal and will stand a new trial (hopefully). The case against them was completely biased and the Atlanta appeals court has thrown it out. Instead of getting your information from 1 biased source as you seem to do read up on this stuff before you post about it.

biased? they where spying, they should have known what was gonna happen to them If they got cought. I actually listend to the speach that one women made and then I visited their site

i'm glad there was a counter-protest, and that news agencies actually reported on it... i truly hate just seeing one side of any issue and getting it drilled into my brain 24/7

and who cares how big it was? it's the effort that counts

Jesus...

300,000 AW's to 400 PW's...does kinda remind you of the vietnam era. :D

I think it goes to show the extent of the Anti-War feeling when compared to the number of Pro-War supporters.

300 million ..but I dont see the reasoning behind that statement

295 700 000 CIA estimates. Strange thing the world's only superpwer can't count their own population.

I don't doubt the accuracy of the numbers. But let's remember that the discontent are generally more likely to voice their opinions than the content.

That said, this should make the distaste for the war undeniably apparent to the administration.

He wasnt talking about you, he meant the CIA. Mr Smart.

I don't follow polls or anything...but isn't currently over half the US against the war in iraq? Also ain't Bush's approval rating in 30's?

The fact it got equal time shows how biased our media is. 300,000 people that shut down parts of our nation's capital get equal air time as 400 people meeting in a park.

I see you been paying attention (and people bitch when I post poll numbers) :). His approval is 37% (about that of Nixon during watergate) and over 60% disagree with Bush on the war in Iraq.

Actually...I haven't which is why I didn't state exact numbers. I just guessed those figures. :p

Sowwy.

As far as I cantell it didn;t get equal time, it was a blurb at best, but that's still more than most things get

And all this really shows is there's a lot of leftover hippies waiting around to protest something... some people just have a lot of free time and nothing to do

oh come on!! way to invalidate the reasons behind the protest by saying "they have nothing better to do" ..that's utter bullshit ..in the days leading to war I attended a peace rally that had 30,000 people in sub zero degree temperatures ..it was bloody unbearable yet that didnt stop people for prostesting in something they believed in ...if more people had the conviction to stand up for what is right, Iraq would never had been invaded

it takes courage to stand up to unpopular sentiment

I'm only posting this because I am basically right next door to this demonstration. The whole idea behind it is wrong. Whether you are for the war or not is irrelevant when talking about bringing the troops home. It would be completely stupid for us to pull out now that the country needs our help. We're there now, deal with it. Leaving the Iraqis to build back on their own would do no good whatsoever. If you want to protest, do it against Bush or something. Most of the kids I talked to, who went to the protest, only went for the free concert.

really? if you believe in something it shouldn;t take courage to stand up for it, you should stand up for it because you think it's right... it doesn;t mean you're being courageous, just means you actually care about your beliefs

You are making little sense. First you say you have nothing to do when you protest then you say you protest because you care about your beliefs and what is right. Which is it?

Second, C-span gave equal time to both and as usual fox just outright didn't care about showing their bias by reporting about the 400 people demonstration and ignoring the 300,000+.:dozey:

Nonsense!

If you can spend 360 billion dollars in military per year, surely you can keep track of your own population...

We have a lot of problems with illegal immigration. So when the cencus is done every decade you get a lot of people that will not report and then you get others who simply don't feel like it. I don't know how you can track how many people you have in such a huge country.

when anyone who didnt support the war was branded anti-american or a traitor then yes I can rightfully say that it was courageous

during the initial days leading up to war I'd be instantly banned from a an american forum if I dared bring up the lies behind the WMD claim ..one idiot said to me: "STFU stern saddam killed 3000 americans in 9/11 we have every right to invade" ....so dont tell me it was the popular thing to do because there was NO opposition to the war in the US during the initial media spin that sent 1000's of americans to their deaths

There was one, that's right ONE, show on main stream media before the invasion and that show was on MSNBC hosted by Donahue. Every other including Fox, CNN, ABC, CNBC, CBS, were all pro-war. That's probably because the Bush administration was only giving access to reporters that supported the invasion. The media in this country is sick.

probably why Donahues show was axed

there was a very vocal opposition to the war in non mainstream news sources as well as in academia: Chomsky, Howard Zinn etc ..even some people you'd never think would be opposed said their 2 cents

Doesn't sound like they had much choice. She went in purposely to break the law and get arrested by the sounds of it. She knew what she was doing and she knew they would have to arrest her for it.

I find the whole thing funny. Cindy gets arrested, and then PW showing up. PW sure is a funny bunch, most things they do are hillarious.

I'm the pesky liberal that agrees, the police were just doing their job. However, I think it is completely unconsitutional to be required to have a permit to assamble. I also don't think it was the smartest move to arrest her, all that will do is create more media coverage.

It is best to have a permit. Otherwise people could just assemble wherever the hell they want for whatever dumb reason, such as planning to blow something up. Who knows what ways the system could be abused if people weren't required to get a permit.
