Ditto... and can someone explain how this relates to Photoshop??

Is this original art? Or image editting?

What's stopping someone just posting a photo which depicts this topic?
Surely someone could claim it to be photoshopped when its just an original photo?

So many questions... so few answers :cheese:

you can draw in photoshop. so..

this subject is bloody stupid!

because it involves actual talent instead of just pasting other people's photo's into other people's photo's?

As Evil pointed out, you can draw, paint and so on in photoshop, countless people do these days

Erm, could be me, but where does it say it needs to be drawn/painted/whatever'd? I could paste a photo of a bunch of shells into a photo of a grocery store (lame example) and still be following all the rules.

then whats the problem with people complaining?

I don't see why its so hard, do a picture of what a bank would look like if currency didn't exist, or what a vending machine would look like. Tons of things could be done with this weeks topic.

Sorry, but I find this topic boring. :dozey:

naa, doing a spinning logo for some two-bit company that doesn't like paying much but keeps wanting changes yet nothing that would stretch the imagination of a child, thats boring. :)

coming up with, eg: my example of a bank that trades in goods instead of currency, just how different could something simple like that look.. Or how about the tills in a store, how would things look if small coins were never invented. I mean, you'd have to use different things to carry your "money" around.. So certain things would be "worth" more than others.. eg: a single potato would be worth the same as 30 strawberrys, so you'd carry a potato around with you instead of 30 strawberries. What would you carry it in? Civilisation would have long since designed stuff to carry things in safely. a damage potato would be worth nothing, so it would need to be protected

I don't think its boring, I thinks its actually a very challenging subject that requires more thought than the others have.

This is true; however, unless you did a good job, you would lose.

I think it could be cool because there are so many possibilities.Did you submit any ideas? If so, what were they?

Thanks fenric, I was beginning to think everyone hated my idea.
:x

I don't hate the idea tim, I just don't find it to be fun or humerous.

I always presumed that to 'photoshop' an image was to change the context of one picture by splicing in scenes from another. That is what I came to understand from another forum I use to post at and from several other sources. No one drew out complete 'photoshop'd images from scratch, that defeats the purpose.

It seems that the majority of the contests here are just 'art' contests. I suggest it should be called "Weekly Art Contest". Because to me it is misleading from what I have come to believe what 'photoshopping' is.

Am I making any sense?

I guess it comes down to what 'you' think 'photoshopping' means.

these people you spoke to are just retouching men. Not really artists, look for concept artists and digital painters, of which myself and John Wallin for example come under both, we use photoshop for painting with from scratch, just like we would traditional media. I've PM'd you a link to various images I've done, the painted ones were done from scratch either in photoshop or painter to show its quite possible.

And if PS painting isn't your thing, there's always painting on paper, or sketching or drawing, scanning the results in and cleaning them up in photoshop. So I doubt you'd be limited just to drawing with a mouse, which is difficult for the best of people.

But isn't what this contest is all about this week 'splicing two images together'? That's what I had in mind when I made the suggestion. Actually for this week, it might even involve more than one image if you want to make something really complex, which could yield some interesting results imo. I know what you mean though chu. Ever seen the stuff over at http://www.worth1000.com ? Some of those guys are awesome. I was serious when I wanted to know if you had any ideas though. I'd like to change up the contest a bit too, so maybe you got something that could do that. Later.

edit: fenric can I see some of your work? I've tried painting in the past, but I gave up till I get around to buying a wacom :).

I'd just like to point out not everyone dissed your idea tim8604...

I, and many others, were just confused about the rules and whether it was original art or not (just so i know what to get started on :cheese: )

...anyway it seems you are confused too looking at your last post, heh! Maybe the mods should state it can be any type of work in the rules (or indeed specify either way to avoid further confusion).

I think it's a pretty broad subject that could produce interesting results if you let your imagination do half the work. mmmm... i have a cunning idea but i'm so never gonna find the right source shots for this....(I wish i had a digital camera)

Hehe, I was just kidding around about that. I could care less if everyone/anyone hated my idea ;). And I'm not really confused on the topic, but was confusing myself trying to figure out what chu was talking about, hehe. I already know what I'm doing for this contest, which is going to be splicing a few pictures together and editing the final result.

also phate, if your source pics are pretty easy things... I wouldn't mind taking a few pics for ya.

you'll just steal my ideas you thieving rascal....

no really, if you could simply take a high quality picture of a computer monitor (preferably with keyboard showing infront aswell), on a desk... with a space to one side, that would be cool.

Maybe even a picture of your desk as a whole with monitor/keyboard etc on it.... so i can play around with various shots.

(no honestly i'm not a perv who wants to see what your desk looks like)

p.s And yes there is alot of pictures of desks AND computers out there but none look 'natural'. Can u help then?

p.p.s I think i might be bitting off more than i can chew with this idea :)

Hehe, would you want the 'real' version of my desk, with random note pads, pencils, cds, pictures, and the like on it? Or you want me to clean house a little first ;)?

just leave all the shit on it... that'll be cool

(have pm'd u my email addy)

I'm off to bed... uni nice and early tomorrow

cheers for the pics in advance anyway

Hehe, nice one anable... I would totally go for that deal too. Especially if they were offering them now, before they came out :p.

and slash and burn, that's really funny lol.

Well.. as silly as the contest idea is, heres my first :|

For anyone wondering, it says:

Neo: "I'm the one and my last two movies sucked ass. Can I pay with kung-fu".

Agent: "Sure!".

haha nice.. only I kinda liked the last 2 movies. You have your opinion though :)

Thanks for the encouragement Tim. I'm really happy with how it turned out considering I've just recently picked up Photoshop and I have no one to teach me. Most tutorials are either for earlier versions (I use 7.0) or aren't covering what I want to learn. You wouldn't happen to have a good tutorial site to recommend would you?

I still think the best way to learn photoshop is to mess around with each function, sometimes see what the diffrent options do, or take classes, or just search online for something you want to create.

I like Anable's image, but every image looks to "straight", look at the edit->transform for "SKEW", "rotate" and "perspective", they can fix most angle issues.

And a little photoshop tip to turn a "Background"(flat image) into an transparent layer double click it in the layers window(F7)
"Tab" hides all other windows and The F key switches view modes and CTRL + and - change zoom.

*looks at the sudden flood of entries since last night*

see, told ya it wasn't a bad competition this week :)

There's a nice turorial within the photoshop directory. It's in pdf format, and the folder also contains samples to use along with it. I think it was in Program Files\adobe\photoshop\goodies\tutorials or something.

I think this weeks idea isn't bad. I also suggest we don't make to much rules, or it will get confusing. Did you know that little boys often spend more time making/defining the rules than playing the actual game? I'm not kidding, it's the truth(psychological survey, but no source, sorry). Little boys like to win at "rulefight". Let's focus on the art and not on the rules, shall we. I'll try to submit something, but my mother's staying at the hospital for the week, I mean to visit her every day, so I don't have much time.

PS: thanks to some of you guys I rented Monthy Python's quest for the holy grail last night. Awesome movie. I loved the killerrabbit and the black night without limbs. In my turn, I recommend "Amazon women on the moon".

Little boys also claim things without proof too, did you know that :p

Naa your alright, but seriously, you know why there aren't any competitions without rules? Cause they fail so quickly their never around long enough to notice thats way. Gotta have set rules, and IMO I think the rules we got are quite fair, I wouldn't say their always being changed cause their not, their being refined until they fit the community and participants in the competition/

If there were no rules:

5 people would use content from the stolen HL2 files

2 would take images from some site thinking their the only ones to know about the site

8 people would bitch that there wasn't any rules

1 person would submit a stick figure drawing done in MS paint and think they could win it

9 people would do something completely different

everyone would give themselves 100000 votes

those who didn't cheat would complain its unfair that others have been cheating

Abom would close the thread

Munro would open it again

Ghost would say he likes food

Fenric would give a bunch of useless reasons nobody asked for in third person on why there are rules to everything

Shuzer would give up copying Fenric's avatar and just take the original

The Sheep would eat the Wolf

People who joined in November would ask whats with all the eyes

The topic would become a discussion about horror films

D33 would tell everyone off

HL2 would be released and nobody would notice

Someone from another site would complain about freedom of speech

Everyone would tell them that doesn't include private forums

Someone would do a poll asking should freedom of speech be allowed on private forums

23 people from June would tell them its been done already

The thread would be locked

The thread would be unlocked

Someone would move it to off-topic

Someone else would move it to Rumors and Speculation

Thread finally gets deleted

Only to reappear six weeks later in Hardware and Software Troubleshooting

Someone from December asks who actually won the competition anyway

Spud realises in the confusion weeks before that we all forgot to actually vote on it

It would be anarchy

Damn Fenric, you must have been bored. LOL. How true though.

As long as I can make somone laugh I'm happy :cheese:

I was thinking of just posting the original picture, but I thought I'd add all the price tags being crossed out. Its sorta hard to make out though exept for the 2 big ones.

I hate how low quality I have to make these pics to upload them here.

And I hate how the site I usually host my pics on is being a jack ass so I cant put any new pics up right now :flame:

(The other thing I like about this picture was how easy it was for me to just say........."Hey Rayn......go curl up into a ball next to all the milk". And then I had that awsome pic :) )

Um Dalith? That has nothing to do with the contest.
Dont submit anything unless its within the guide lines.

see now i wish i had friends who'd do that (ie: what their told ;)).. But they all insist on wanting to know what their motivation is and making suggestions, i hate people making suggestions, just lay on the god damn floor!

ahh i feel better

i didn't even noticed you'd edited the image neither, thats pretty neat (or was I just not paying enough attention *grins*)

Phate pics

yo phate, give me your email so i can send you your pics... im on the way out to door so i can't do it now....later! ( sorry for crappy grammer :p)
