Weird shadow issue

I'm having a really weird issue with my HL2 game concerning shadows. Shadows in really dark areas will show up as weird random colors such as blue, green, red, etc. I have no idea why its doing this, I took some screenshots to show it:

One of them shows me looking in one of the same spots but with the flashlight on showing these are in fact shadows because its normal with the flashlight on it. I'm using DirectX 9.0c and the latest drivers for my video card. Here are my system specs:

AMD64 4000+
ATI Radeon X850XT Platinum
MSI K8N Neo4 Platinum
Windows XP SP2

Nothing is overclocked.

Huh? What're we looking for, because I can't see anything.

Really? If so thats pretty pathetic cause it looks like crap. I've beat the whole game and those screwed up shadows are my only complaint so far.

You might have to turn the brightness up to see the pictures they came out pretty dark, the shadows I'm talking about are dead in front of me and if you turn your brightness up a bit you can't miss them... they are green and blue in these screenshots.

I don't really see what you're talking about?

Wheelman, you must remember.
Not everyone in the world has your system.
If they did, they may have added Doom 3 shadowing /w soft shadows. Though they didn't because they wanted almost everyone to actually get the shadows.

Also, I think that may be correct on how it displays those colors for the shadows.

Anyways name a game that has just as wide open enviorments, more details, just as good as physics, and can run on a Dx7 gfx card /w other extremly low specs while looking good and that came in out 2004 or lower and not suffer from that error.

Doom 3 is discluded as it has extremely small enviroments and...heh physics really arn't..up to..HL2..
Farcry...physics and I don't believe scale as far as source.

Remember, HL2 shadows are calculated all before hand not in real time(Except dynamic shadows). Meaning that shadow on that wall was calculated in the map file. So I don't doubt that is how it's actually suppose to be.

In this one:

Do you not see a big blue splotch right in the corner? And some green on the left?

They are suppost to be like that? I've never seen shadows like that in my life :| And why would the color of the shadow just stop when it hit a corner? If its supposed to be like that they didn't do a very good job at making them. For some reason the game is putting a colored mask over the black shadows... there isn't any light hitting these places making them these colors... just some glitch it seems.

Actually, I see nothing in the first and third picture. Its just black, might just be my monitor though.

I adjusted the levels on the pictures, now if you cannot see what I'm talking about y'all must be blind...

The level adjustment makes the pictures look splotchy but you can still plainly see what I'm talking about.

I see exactly what you're talking about. A friend of mine has been complaining about this for a while, it's particularly bad in some CS maps for him. It's not just a matter of adjusting gamma and brightness, it shows up even on default settings. My best guess is that it's a graphics card issue? I don't have this problem with my 9800 but my friend has an X800 generation gfx card, and as far as I know the X850 is an X800 with a bit of a boost.

Looks like bad jpg compession to me...but I dunno if it's ingame then that's just weird..

It's the sort of effect you'd expect when running in 16 bit color, this was actually the first thing I checked on my friend's comp, to no avail. This definately happens in 32 bit mode.

If it doesn't happen on the 9800 I'm guessing its just bad support for the X8xx series in the ATI drivers. I ran the HL2 demo on my old Geforce 3 Ti200 and this didn't happen. Thanks for the response Will.

GonzoBabbleshit: Yes I know the pictures look bad, because I adjusted the levels in Photoshop so they look really splotchy, I'm just talking about the colors on the walls that you see, yes its ingame.

Sorry to resurrect this thread, but I just started up HL2 and out of nowhere this same problem came up. Really dark places are red or green. My screenshots show up really dark and you can't see the problem. I have a Radeon X800XL and an LCD monitor, I'm wondering if it might be a problem with my monitor?

Ok, can anyone help me out here? Valve support gave me an answer but it didn't work. I've confirmed that it's not a problem with my monitor bacuse I printed out a screenshot and the problem is still there. Plus games like FEAR are fine. I've also noticed this issue to a lesser extent in HL:S, but not in DOD:S. I haven't tried CS:S yet. Do you guys have any idea what could be causing this? I really don't want to play Sin Episodes for the first time with this ugly bug.

Hmmm... It seems that the problem only occurs with X800 (XL) cards, because another guy had this problem and he had an X800XL too :|
Try finding another card (borrow it from someone, i dunno) and put it in your computer to be sure.
