April 12th is the very last day. That’s when the clock runs, and the deadline looms.

And here you thought it was April 15th. Nope, it’s the twelfth. Because we’re not talking about the day your taxes are due. On no. We’re talking about the day that your Windows XP or Windows XP SP1 computer will be automatically updated to XP SP2 (Service Pack 2) whether you want it to or not. Period.

Up until now users who did not want to accept the SP2 update had the option of temporarily blocking the update from being downloaded to their machines through the Automatic or Windows Update mechanisms, however that option expires on April 12th.

According to Microsoft’s latest alert on the issue, “The intent of this alert is to provide you with a reminder about the upcoming deadline around the date on which Automatic Update (AU) and Windows Update (WU) will deliver Windows XP SP2 regardless of the presence of the blocking mechanism.”

Pffh, they can go ahead and try
I know i sure did, and my computer refused to install it :-/

tick tock tick tock tick tick tock tick tock tick tock tock tick tock tick tock.

Still a whole lot of time left.

Hehe, I just got SP2 yesterday! I put it off for so long because all I heard were horror stories.

Upgraded multiple home computers with it a while ago. Not a glitch. If you're planning a large-scale corporate migration, then yeah I'd be concerned.
(And the stupid "M$" is getting really, really lame now. It's MS. Spelling it ironically does not spark any sudden revelations for anyone.)

M$ needs to release longhorn already damn't!

I won't install SP2, I will hack my XP so I don't have to.

Question is, will they attempt to install winXP SP2 on my (win2k) computer?

hah how? Magic powers? I don't think so. Windows 2000 is safe, unlike crap XP

meh they cant send it to me if they dont know the internal ip of this computer on my network it will probs try and give my proxy sp2 whens it son win2k server family :p

its gunan happen cos it is MS :p

Why man, forim what I have read online, that OS cobined with the new fritz chip will totally **** up your pc.

What if you don't have a connection to the internet?

What if you CAN'T install it? (Hacked serial number)

Not like this is me or anything, I already have SP2 :E

Yeah. It takes a little bit of work for advanced users to get it just how they like, but it's far more stable than any other window's OS, with the exception of 2000, which is much less common.

I think I prefer it to windows 2000 really. XP serves all my needs for the moment. If anything though, I'l just move over to Linux. My brother seems to have fine tuned that down to a tee now.

If HL1 and HL2 were supported on the mac...I would probally using OSX right now instead of xp.

I can dream tho... :(

Oh I get it! M$, as in the money sign, microsoft like money!

Hahaha. X.x

I'm fine with XP...

...I just have a copy that's so ****ed up my Java functionality has died and refused to be restored, hence my current use of Netscape over IE.

The service pack was corrupt last time I tried to download it- I'd like to see how the hell Microsoft could make a 56ker download that awful behemoth. It'd make the whole "OMG STEAM EVIL" thing seem positively trivial.

Where did they say they'd force content on me anyway? Other than their secret evil charter.

I love sp2, makes my system fly and alot secured :E

well not 100% for the later, but with special 3rd party firewalls and anti virus, SP2 is realy worth it.

Didn't they used to have a method for 56kers to download it piecemeal? If your connection is that much of a problem are you going to be grabbing the smaller updates in the future that will require SP2 too?

I could just dissconnect my network cable forever...

Well, that would also defeat the purpose of having SP2 :)

dont put him off ;)

And the only thing that worries me about this forced SP2 thing, is they could try pull a similar stunt to force win2k users to upgrade to WinXP :(

Wow, good luck to all the 56k people in the world :|

i don't know if many people know this but you can order the sp2 cd off the m$ website for free, saves downloading.

Don't be stupid that would mean they would be giving away windows xp for free ;) that wouldn't do would it.

For the record pallidium still exists, but microsoft only changed the name cause it drew to much attention.

its sh1t like this that drives me insane. I can already picture myself with a brand new PC, trying to talk some 18 old student working for exstra cash on the microsoft support (who is to young and to afraid to make any critical dission, regarding cd key that could make Gates even fatter), that it is VERY important to me, that i get a new CD key for the OS, or other wise im not able to watch my movies, play my games, all because Fat ****ing Gates is incapable of making an OS that dosent crash or violates its self.

If this becomes real......linux and very cheap and no brand name chinese bamboo hardware here i come. And if they get to them too, screw the PC and the net. I refuse to be restrained onto wich way i should or should not throw my money. Jesus its like commercials and a good quality product isent enough any more, now they have to have you bound by law, to buy their products aswell.

Unfortunatly almost all the games only run on windows, so the pc gamemarket wil decrease, but no worry cause microsoft has got the x-box. But most of us will have to buy longhorne, simply casue the companies that we work for will do it, and if we wanna be able to do things when we are home, we'll have to have trhe hardware, and your going to need it for al kinds of new aplications, cause evry software devoloper is dying for this, so expect softimage, max, photoshop next all to be only compatible with this, so basicly we are screwed.

Well heres a thing, don't pirate software and nothing will happen. Only people scared about this are the actual pirates.

And the market for "professional" applications will not grow and possibly get smaller, would you want your product on a completly secure platform with a massive userbase. or put it on a small marketspace and with users that are not used to paying for software*

*Most linux users I have spoken to dont like paying for software, does not represent majority.

I'm not pirate and I am afraid, I don't feel like I have to authorize to use my own damn pc, sorry I PAID FOR THE DAMN THING, I CAN DO WHAT I PERSONALLY WANT WITH IT. Stuff like that is pissing me off what Micro$oft is going to do. Its just horrible that they will be trying this. I may just be going to linux if that happens, I don't like when people try and control what I do with my own property.
