WH40K Mod anyone?

I have and idea (I know everyone here does but listen anyway):

Make a new Warhammer 40K Modification for the Half Life 2 Source Engine. Now I know this was done on Half Life originally, and i'm not sure how that played, since I never had the experience of playing it first hand, but I feel this has to be done. I mean there are so many different ideas for maps and such a range of characters to model too. It would be multiplayer and possibly even have a singleplayer story too, although the story and what race to use hasn't been decided yet. Heck, whether to do a singleplayer side has yet to be decided. I'm not sure how much longer it would take to complete the singleplayer part if we chose to make it.

I'm thinking for the character select options it could either be like the original Counter-Strike in that there are 4 different types of character for each side (i.e. Good - Space Marine, Imperial Guard, Eldar and Bad - Chaos, Tyranids, Orks etc...) and they battle against each other. Either that, or the Counter-Strike for X-box method i.e. for each seperate map you would have two specific forces battling each other (i.e. Space Marines vs. Tyranids on an Outpost on a planet, or Eldar in an Ork-infested forest) and you would be able to choose what colour and chapter you were. Any preferences to either idea or any new one would be appreciated.

You would also have different classes and roles to play as. For example (not the final ideas, just made up on the spot) for the Space Marines you would be able to play as a Scout Marine, a Space Marine, an Apothacary or a Terminator, each with different weapons, pro's and cons.

For the game types, you could have the original Team Deathmatch and other multiplayer-themed games, such as Capture the Flag, King of the Hill and maybe even steal a few things of Unreal Tournament and have Assault (like Space Marines defending a base against the oncoming Tyranid hordes).

The possibilities are endless. Tell me what you think (I'm sure a few of you know about / like Warhammer 40K, I've been playing Dawn of War and I think Warhammer deserves another chance at a decent FPS slot).

One more thing; would i have to obtain permission from Games Workshop before work started to go ahead with the project?

I'm reasonably sure there's already a Warhammer 40k mod going for Source, and I know there are for Battlefield and Doom 3.

In any case, I don't think you have the slightest idea of how massive an undertaking it would be to make a total-conversion modification of Warhammer 40k for Source. If you think you have what it takes, go for it. But understand that this is a serious commitment that could take several years to see the light of day.

Games Workshop has some rules on its site about making TCs set in the Warhammer universe which I advise you to read up on.

I know I don't know how long it would take, and I have never done anything like this before. And if there's another WH40K Mod going, then I'll probably have something to do with that instead.

Failing that, I want to give it a shot. I'd like to try it out.

Where exactly could I find the info on TC's for Warhammer? I've looked around on the Games Workshop website but failed to find anything :).

EDIT

Got the webpage, nevermind.

I remember reading it ages ago when I was doing stuff to start up a DOW site (now gone :() and when I was working on the Tau mod team.

We want people to express their enjoyment of our games with as little interference from us as possible, as long as they behave reasonably with our IP and follow any reasonable requests that we may make. We are not inherently opposed to hobbyists creating games or mods using our IP, in fact we are flattered that people want to spend so much time creating games and mods in the GW universes.

If you want to make a game, TC or a mod using our IP you must adhere to the following (in addition to the general principles as outlined above):

* Any game or mod must be a "total conversion." In other words, you must not use our intellectual property (logos, images, names etc.) in relation to the worlds, names, logos, or images of any other company. For example, you cannot place our Space Marines in a Disney total conversion using the Unreal engine, but you could make a TC solely using Space Marines with the Unreal engine. This is, of course, assuming that you have permission to use the Unreal engine.
* Please bear in mind that we may require you to remove the game or mod from any public forum at any time so that we can comply with any licenses that we may have with computer game publishers/developers. Be aware that we may even have to insist that the mod be destroyed. Please take very careful note of this statement, as we would not want you to feel unfairly treated at a later date.
* The game or mod must be strictly non-commercial – this includes any web site that the mod or game is hosted on. You also cannot pay a printing company to publilsh copies of it onto CD. It may also mean that you cannot get sponsorship.
* It must be made clear on any readme files, splash/intro screens and accompanying material that the game or mod is unofficial and the origins of the intellectual property must be made obvious (e.g., your mod might say “Battletoes a total conversion for XXXX (insert game name) using intellectual property owned by Games Workshop. Used without permission...etc." See the relevant disclaimer on the following page.).
* The game or mod must not devalue any Games Workshop product in any way.
* Any distribution (zipped or otherwise) of the whole, or any part, of the mod or game must be accompanied with the appropriate disclaimers and must also follow these guidelines.
* The functionality, atmosphere, and parameters of any mod or game must be consistent with the relevant IP.

yeah i read a lot of that and it seems really restrictive with other things. Strangely, that looks a bit more relaxed.

Do you know for sure that there's already a WH40K mod already in progress?

Not for sure. I remember seeing renders of a Cadian Imperial Guard trooper and I think it was for a Source engine mod, but I'm not totally sure.

Ack. Alas, I've googled it and the guy whos made the WH40K mod is making the one for Half Life 2 too. I'll enquire there about it. Thanks for your time.

Why not team up?

Tbh I'm struggling to see the appeal as far as the player is concerned. I myself would get a lot out of creating a Mod set in the W40K universe, but I don't see how it could come close to DoW whcih has had direct support from the GW team.

What more would you be able to offer? What would make this Mod better on the Source engine than on the DoW engine (which already has content and a very user-friendly map/scenario editor going for it)?
