What about War of the Worlds influence?

I'm currently reading War of the Worlds, and I've listened to the 1938 radio broadcast. It seems HL2 has a good WotW's influence.

The major one that comes to mind is the striders. They are near-copies of the machines the martians use in WotW's. The machines in the novel are capsules atop three long tripod legs. They have heat rays that disintegrate/burn anyone in their path.

Even the back cover of my copy of the book has an illustration of the machines, and it's a strider. If I can find the illustration online, I'll post a link or image.

Any other thoughts?

Here. I found the front cover.

If you do a Google image search for War of the Worlds, you'll see even more strider-like imagery.

That is actually very similar to the early strider concept from the Half-Life 2 book.

Everything nowadays is "borrowed" just look at Disney.

They have the same shape, but their innards are different. :p

I thought it would be cool to have a WotW FPS, and I guess I essentially got one.

Hot damn. I reckon the ones in that pic are identical to the Terrorpods from the old Amiga game of the same name...

There are no wholly original ideas, anymore. If you want to be really cynical, you could say that the Greeks wrote every story conceivable (and even they said that there were only, like, six original stories...all other stories are variations on those themes).

Heh, I thought I was the only one who saw the similarities. When I first saw a screenie of a strider I thought "hmmm...HG Wells, war of the worlds", its a good book.

Yeah this game seems like a combination of War of the Worlds and 1984

A War of the Worlds mod would be really cool and pretty easy.

Just alter the strider model a little, plug in some WW1-era weaponry and bam! War of the Worlds.

maybe if some1 can email a mod team that they may know of maybe they could work on it !
That would be sweet !

Just a though !

Also those headcrab shell things that the combine fire off into certain areas remind me of the war of the worlds cylinders that the martians arrive on earth in.

Wierd how thier making a WotW movie that's suposed to come out next year

Not to mention the serious take on posthumanism added to the plot! I see some Brave New World influence there.

WotW takes place in the late 1800s, not the 1920s
Depends on if you're talking about the H.G. Wells book or the Orson Welles radio broadcast.
