what camcorder to get?

Hey guys, I'm looking to get my first camcorder and have a budget of 300-500 dollars. I'm a little overwhelmed by the number of formats (mini dv tapes, hard drive, flash memory) and choices and brands out there. Do you guys have any suggestions? I'm looking for a solid, recreational use camcorder.

I think digital video tapes are being phased out. And if they weren't, why would you want to use them - in comparison with flash memory, it's retarded.
