Okay, so I just got home. Steam opens up automatically and says "Validating HL2 files". So I frantically go to my games section only to see that HL2 is still coming soon.

What a cruel joke to play, Valve.

Validating is different from Updating... remeber that...

Validating - Steam is checking to make sure you don't have any "illegal" files on your system so taht you can't hack or play any game online with out a valid CDKey

Updating - There is an update available and Steam is downloading the new files. Aka: a new game, or just some bug fixes

its not a trick
basically Steam is checking to see if u have the HL2 pre-loads and whether its all up to date.
it checks every time because its probably set to do that each time u login on Steam

it had me fooled the first time as well...but i learned it does that every time u open Steam.

It's not to do with checking for warez, it's just Steam checking the itegrity of the caches, checking they're not corrupt and stuff.
