OK, here's the deal: my mom is getting dsl...tomorrow!! Anyways, my pc doesn't have a phone line jack or whatever you want to call it so the only way i can get internet is getting it wireless right? What exactly do i need and how much wil it cost? I think there is like a router or something involved as well as a hub? I'm not too good when it comes to tyhis stuff. ANyone wanna help me out?

thanks

you need a wireless card (i think) and the router (obviously)

thats it? swwt. thanks. I'll just wait for more ppl to confirm

You only need a wireless card if you want it to be just that, wireless. All you need is a router, and you don't need a phone line either. You have an Ethernet port, which looks like a big phone jack, but is indeed not. All you do, is get a router, hook it up, and forward it to your computer.

EDIT: I believe it's an Ethernet slot, not 100% about that however.

Dude you're obnoxious... anyway if you want wired you will need 1 network card and 1 router & 2 CAT5 wires of whatever length you need, if you want wireless you will need TWO wireless network cards and 1 wireless router. Wired saves money.

im obnoxious? i dont get it. Anyways thanks guys but umop, does the "host" PC (my mom's that has the dsl) also need a network card? Thanks guys.

I learned most of my networking knowledge through tom's hardware networking site. I suggest you read up. It's not to difficult to set-up a home network (especially with Windows XP), but you need to read it none the less and learn about the security settings you need to enable.

PS: ATIforever change your sig size. It's obnoxious.

[Edit]: I was editing my post, how did it make a new one?

You dont need a modem in your computer, heres how DSL works:

A phone line goes into your DSL modem (external, outside of your computer)
From there, an ethernet cable (looks like a phoneline, but bigger) would go to a router
From your router, one ethernet cable would go to your moms computer, and one would go to yours

So what you need to buy is a Router and 2 ethernet cables.

heres a diagram:
Code:
 PONE LINE->                       |
                               ____|____
                               | MODEM |
                               |_______|
 ETHERNET CABLE->                  |
                               ____|____
                               | ROUTER|
                               |_______|
 ETHERNET CABLES->              |    |
                       _________|    |_________
                      |                        |
                 _____|_____               ____|____
                 | MOM'S PC|               |YOUR PC |
                 |_________|               |________|

Hope that helps

And i changed your sig size.... it was too big.

OK thank you guys. Damn i loved my sig!!! \

Anyways...Verizon said that the package comes with a "free modem and router"

Would the "free router" be wireless? Becasue you see i would much much much much much rather it be wireless becasue my Moms PC is on the 1st floor of the house in the corner and my PC is on the 2nd floor on the opposite side so its really really far away and it would be a pain in the ass to have to wire it...

Code:
 PONE LINE->                       |
                               ____|____
                               | MODEM |
                               |_______|
 ETHERNET CABLE->                  |
                               ____|____
                               | ROUTER|
                               |_______|
 ETHERNET CABLES->              |    |
                       _________|    |_________
                      |                        |
                 _____|_____               ____|____
                 | MOM'S PC|               |YOUR PC |
                 |_________|               |________|

The router in the diagram is wired (right? at least i think that6 is where u were going) I am taking a guess that wired routers would cost less than wireless routers...so chances are that Verizon will give us a wired router. Do i have the option to change it to a wireless one? (buying one) Would the diagram change?

Spud, if it isnt too much trouble could you draw out another diagram (if it changes like i said above) it really kicked butt.

So remember...i want wireless if it is possible.

And i'm gonna take a look at that link...

EDIT: with wireless stuff do i need ethernet cables or just the wireless network cards?

i feel so retarded on this subject

I currently have LAN set up for my 56k... lol..
Not to sure on wireless but how we have it.
My computer connects
My computer has an ethernet card
I have a HUB
My moms computer has an ethernet card
We have wires going from our ethernet cards to the hub.
Then she has her networking to use the ethernet card
I have my 56k to allow other people to connect
Works greatly. Ive had it set up(i set it up) for about 1 - 2 years now.

If you want to go wireless you can, a good wireless router will run you about $150, If I were you I would stick with the free wired one.

Wireless is kind of complicated, you need to buy a wirless router, and a wireless network card for both PCs.
The only ethernet cable would go from the modem to the router.

Code:
 PONE LINE->                       |
                               ____|____
                               | MODEM |
                               |_______|
 ETHERNET CABLE->                  |
                               ____|____
                               | ROUTER|
                               |_______|
 ANTENNAS      ->                |    |

 RECEIVERS (WIRELESS NETWORK CARDS)
                 _____|_____               ____|____
                 | MOM'S PC|               |YOUR PC |

If you game then if at all possible have someone wire the place for you. Wired is the best for gaming as there is no latency.

If you must then wireless would be the easiest to setup but make sure you encrypt the network with WEP and turn off broadcasting.

Broadcasting sends a signal out saying "I'm here". If you turn that off then others with wireless won't detect your router. You will have to tell the router the MAC address of the network card on the PC you want it to allow a connection to though.

I just got a Netgear wireless router and it works pretty well. The only thing that connects to it is my PDA so far. lol
I'm wired through the router otherwise. Netgear and D-link seemed to perform the best over linksys, belkin and others. Although linksys is also a quality router.

Standards
802.11b (11Mbps) and 802.11G (54Mbps) are all hardware based and are accepted as standards in the public. 802.11G (108Mbps) deals with compression and may use a little more system resources. It does not reach 108Mbps in reality.
802.11a (54Mbps) uses the 5GHz band, instead of the 2.4GHz band, so it is less likely to receive any interference from cordless phones or other sources. 802.11a is used more in business than homes but a lot of people don't like the interference from 802.11b/g.

Asus, how much do you think it would cost to have someone wire my house? would they have to open up walls and crap? would it take a long time?

If its too expensive or they have to knock down walls than wireless we go. (although my bro said that verizon said that it comes with a wireless router) anyways...you said wireless would have too much latency, but it would still be faster than my current 56k right? would i notice the difference?

I think that micrsoft made a really good router that is also easy to set up.

linksys also i saw one for 100 bucks

can u give me links to some good routers?

thanks guys...

P.S SpuD i cant see the code heer at skool, i dont know why...macs? so ill post later at like 7pm at home.

If they give you a wireless router then just buy the wireless card for your desktop.

and i'll be fine right? I mean it'll be better than 56k right?

will i be able to play hl2 online OK? CS:Source?

correct me if i'm wrong but if i have a network my mom can be on the internet at the same time as i am right?

so all i need are two wireless cards: one for me one for mom.

EDIT: this is the router (it looks crappy...) http://www22.verizon.com/ForHomeDSL/channels/dsl/commitment/popup_modem_router.asp

it better be good

EDIT 2:
* Integrated DSL modem
* Ability to share your DSL connection with or without wires
* Built-in 802.11g wireless home networking capabilities
* Premium firewall

you can connect up to four computers in your home to a single DSL connection.

it looks goo enough. and isnt 802.11g the best one for now?

Yeah, it will be better than 56k.
Rather than the provider seeing and just allowing her computer, a router is what they see and you can have many PCs behind it sharing the internet.

Gah, Wired is just a cable going from the router to your PC ethernet card. If you want wireless you'll need to get a wireless card, which is more expenisve then an ethernet card. Also youll have alot of ping. Think of the cable as a power cable, but instead of power, it contains TEH web. I really don't know why you wan't wireless when wired is SOO much easier and BETTER!

well if you had read my post...its becasue the computer is as far away as possible from my moms computer...
Code:

its very sketchy but i tried. ok? so thats kind of it..

hmm...it didnt come out as hot as it looked like. whatever its good enough.

if i decide to get someone to wire my house up would there be any wall smashing? Cause if there is my mom will just say "yeah...whatever, not gunna hapen"

They poke a hole for the outlet and put a plate in the wall, like your AC electric outlets. I don't know much beyond that.

We pre-wired before the drywall went up for the most part. When we add wiring we just run it through the existing paths in the wall and from floor to floor.

i guess im not doing it then. It seems very complicated. and expensive perhaps.

just get wireless if you can not get wired. the lantenecy will be playble on games

OK

and..

OK, the dsl stuff came today, we cant install it until monday, i dont know why, but yeah, it's a router and it has an antenna, so wireless, but do you think that if i get a network card from another company it will work? Will it automatically recognize the card, installation?

SO to check...

router (it is 802.11g)
2 network cards.

Any brand (Linksys, Netgear, D-Link are perfered) will work with your wireless router. Either 802.11b or 802.11g will be good. Both of these standards are faster than your internet.

If the G is only 10$ more than the B then go for it, otherwise you can debate if it's worth it. ;)
