What do you expect to find in the 'Practice' on HL2?

As has been said, it's far cooler when they incorporate the learning curve into the design of the game. Introduce a weapon - put something near there to help you test the weapon, and so on.

Valve pretty much did this in HL1. I'm not even really sure why they put the practice mode in.

I think Valve would include the training level. They play test with people who don't play FPSs, and they want to attract people to the genre. Plus, some of the extra squad/ai/driving/manipulator stuff is sufficiently new/confusing to warrant it. I'm sure all of the l33t players here can opt out.

Yeap!

Just think of the people that haven't played Half-Life 1 or any FPS game (that is kinda impossible but...). It will be very useful to them to go to the Practice first.

That sounds like a pretty good idea.

Perhaps he has fallen asleep on the tram ride in to City 17 (or wherever he's going at the start)? Along with getting the training aspects in, you could also add in any G-man stuff: The back story and how and why Gordon is where he is. Would make sense with that line from G-man about, "Wake up Mr Freeman......"

He wakes with a shudder on the tram; a concerned passenger looks down upon him. "You okay buddy? Bad dream?"

Game begins.

I like it!
yeah, that would be awesome. especially for people that played hl1. nostalgic value ;)

Wow. Nice to find someone who recognizes it. /me turns up Virtuality...

I want a crowbar and a level with fully destructible environment :)

hmmm. ok as much as i want the Manapultor in my hands to play with....Do u really want it at the very start of the map on a "tutorial" map???

i mean this will be strange to have on a "practice" map cause you will be thinking "where did it come from?" and so on.

that would be cool if the training course was the Hazard Course from HL1. How could they do this you ask? Simple, they just have Gman talk to you, saying "You will be arriving soon, Mr. Freeman. Remember your training. The skills you learned in Black Mesa will keep you alive." And the suddenly they flash back to the HL1 Hazard Course.

I think it might be more along the lines of the Halo practice whereby you have been in stasis for a while and need to get a medical done before proceeding. This would happen before you embark for City17.

G-man - Gordon, because you have been in stasis for so long, we jussst need
to make sure there is no....damage. I will leave you in the capable hands of our technical ssstaff. Should everything prove acceptable, and I'm sssure it will, I will see you up ahead...

And on to the training...

Yeah i'm hoping that Training will take place at the beginning of the game. Like Elie or Alyx familiarize you with City 17 and teach you some combat or something that all goes along with the actual game. Kind of like GUNMAN, during the game you were going through training on the big asteroid base and then got sent on your mission, I liked that idea.

Thankyou :). And It's Brian Damage.

Oh man, I can't wait to see how everything falls together in this game, how you get your gun, and stuff. :D

I dont think there will be one really, considering in HL1 he had just joined BlackM and in HL2 he is a bit of vet so he dont need it. On top of that i heard that the starting roll in to the game ( same as "On a Rail") is like you on a train or something into City17 so i dont see where he could do the training. tbh tho its a bit of a random guess whetere there will or wont, and to be fair it dont bother me if there is or aint either.

iF.

EDIT : I really dont want a training level, and for the weapons i think everyone knows how to fire a pistol ffs but perhaps when you meet your resistance gus in later levels, they could give you some pointers on how to use the assault rifles and smgs effectively but nothing major, and for the Manipulator there shouldnt be anything except a mate of yours sayin " Use Fire to grab an object, then secondary to propell the object forward" and thats it. I always thought it was really fun getting a anew weapon and learning how to use it effectively, suck as the barnacle weapon with the tongue ( you know ) and the gauss gun. VALVe stay emersive and not like a book, its the great thig about you games.
