What do you see?

What do you see in the two images?

Obviously it's absurd to suggest any of us should feel guilty because we are products of our time. And to a certain extent maybe we should be glad that we are attentive to the problems of category and definition that occupy our culture. I'm not sure it would be very useful if we were completely blind to distinctions that are still, ideologically, very important. I would be very happy if everyone suddenly stopped seeing race. But as long as race is a factor in behaviour and society I do wonder how useful it would be to be able to ignore it.

I think this is a very important point. Throughout elementary school, I remember being taught that "there's no such thing as race," that MLK's dream had come to complete fruition, and that racism has essentially been eradicated from our culture. As a result, I was completely oblivious to all current racist issues and horribly insensitive on the topic; I had been taught that racism had only existed in the past.

I saw a black man and a white woman. I can't pretend I didn't notice their race - it's pretty visually obvious. But does it matter, is the real question. (Answer: no not to me)

I saw a man and a woman whose skins were the invert of the other. Did I take notice to that at first? No.

Man and woman is what I see. Race doesn't matter to good ol' Shammy.

What's wrong with using adjectives to better identify people? Whenever I see a black guy walking down the street, my mind subconsciously says "Hey, it's a black guy." The same goes for when I see a white woman walking down the street.

Hey, me too!

Wow, do you ever stop thinking about shit like this? You asked me this a year ago and I only recently found the pictures in my Recieved Files folder and deleted them!

Nicky tries in his own small way to abolish race - but tries in vain!

If you acknowledge race, then you're a RACIST!

...is what this test is trying to tell me.

Someone with a fine taste in hats and another one that looks like she's high on pain medication.

Thought log as I was looking at the images (I hadn't read any of the poll options yet):
"A man wearing an odd hat oh and he's black and wearing rather large glasses.

Given the context of the first image the next one is obviously a going to be a white person and the poll is going to be on whether you thought of the black person as a black person and the white person as a white person. Oh look I was right. It's a white woman with a huge ****ing nose."

Would have worked better with the white pic first IMO. As it was I thought "black man, white woman" but had the photos been the other way around I probably would have thought "woman, black man."

I saw a black man and a white woman.

I see race, but I see it positively.

The poll options made me think Black man white woman.

Yes, and therefore the test is stupid.
Acknowledging that the man is black and the woman is white does not make it racism, discrimination or whatever...

First of all, the thread isn't saying ANYTHING. The poll is displaying a collection of data. Your conclusions are your own.

And it has nothing to do with acknowledging race. No shit recognizing someone's race isn't racist. The poll is only asking you WHAT YOU SAW. What your mind used to describe the first flash recollection that came into your mind. For me it was "a man" and "a woman".

I can't really say anything else without repeating what I already said in my earlier posts.

Having the poll before the pictures ruins the experiment. The experiment is supposed to be about instinctive perceptions, but the mere fact that the poll options appear before the pictures means that your perceptions have been influenced, at the very least unconsciously. The board layout really should have the polls after the OP. Anyway, I think my initial perception was an old man and a high schooler.

Do it anyways, people will always fail at reading comprehension.
