Obviously it's absurd to suggest any of us should feel guilty because we are products of our time. And to a certain extent maybe we should be glad that we are attentive to the problems of category and definition that occupy our culture. I'm not sure it would be very useful if we were completely blind to distinctions that are still, ideologically, very important. I would be very happy if everyone suddenly stopped seeing race. But as long as race is a factor in behaviour and society I do wonder how useful it would be to be able to ignore it.
I think this is a very important point. Throughout elementary school, I remember being taught that "there's no such thing as race," that MLK's dream had come to complete fruition, and that racism has essentially been eradicated from our culture. As a result, I was completely oblivious to all current racist issues and horribly insensitive on the topic; I had been taught that racism had only existed in the past.
