If they (zombies) can say that, then they(the host) obviously have some level of consciousness, thus they(the host) are alive.

Let alone find a way to channel that. Why do you think the zombies die if you shoot them in say, the leg? Because it's still a working human body, and massive blood loss would kill it.

If any of you played Opposing Force you'd know that "These crabs can completely control their host's nervous system, can you imagine what the next stage of mutation looks like?" So my guess is yes, the body itself is still alive, but the host has lost control.
