What does it mean when a game goes gold?

what does it mean and why does HL2 have to go gold supposedly to be released on the 30th of september?

just imagine what would happen if the cd-r with hl2 on it got scratched beyond repair on the way to the cd presses . then they would HAVE to release it on steam only for the first week of release :dozey: . either that or they would just send another cd-r with hl2 the next day ;p

or maybe there comps have crashed and everything is wiped off, and they forgot to make a backup, so they have to start hl2 allllll over again, but hey they know what to do , so it might only take 3 years max!

Yeah they have backups upon backups if you read some posts anyways I doubt a crashed computer would be there least of there worries.
