I've tried pot a couple of times (and got high as a kite) and didn't like it. I can't smoke it anymore anyways, as it is frowned upon in the U.S. societies' workplace. :hmph: I still drink from time to time, but mostly beer, as liqour gives me a headache. When I do drink, it's usually for a good reason, like a party or something. I don't down alcohol just for the sake of alcoholism. TBH, I've grown out of mind-altering substances as it hampers my ability to concentrate, which I don't like to begin with. Plus, I would rather invest money in other things these days.

Nicotine can do some evil things if you go past your tolerance level (which would be zero, if you'd never smoked a cigarette before). One of my friends (who smokes regularly, half a pack a day) got the bright idea to smoke rolling tobacco out of a bong one night; he took a huge hit, cleared it, let my friend hit it, then cleared my friend's hit. Five seconds later he was on the ground, coughing and convulsing and vomiting between coughs... for five minutes. He didn't even respond to us for another 10 after that, at which point he started raving about how ridiculous the experience was.

I don't know about everybody else, but I had done weed long before I touched a drop of alcohol. It was easier to get a hold of. Plus I imagine it's a more appealing drug for many of the educated, net-savvy denizens of this fine forum.
