What exactly is the appeal of DoD?

I am curious to know. I don't mean to incite flame wars here. I have always heard many many great things about DoD when it was for half-life 1. However, I just want to ask...

What is the appeal? I don't see it.

To me, the game isn't that specacular looking graphics wise(not a big deal), but the biggest turnoff for me is the combat. I have always heard DoD being heralded as one of the best most realistic WWII shooters(being a mod) out there, but I don't see that evidenced anywhere in here. THe movement speed is superhumanly fast, and everything is just a huge blur. Guy sprints at lightning speed and he's on the ground in half a second. Quite honestly, it reminds me of the insanely twitchy, incredibly fast paced unreal games, when I didn't like.

Call me a heathen, but I just can't find what there is to like about the game. To me, if the movement was done more akin to that of battlefield 2, I might be more inclined to try it some more. I don't know why, but battlefield 2 fiels 'just right' as far as realism and gameplay goes.
 
If you're looking for a realistic WWII experience try Red Orchestra for UT2004 - really great mod. DoD gameplay is much more like CS - very polished off and balanced rather than simulation. Depends what you're in a mood for really :)
 
because it actually REQUIRES teamwork to win, unlike in css say you have one really good guy who can awp down half the other team, well in dod you need more people to hold/capture points and complete objectives, and the different weapon classes makes it more interesting. Respawn keeps the action going, instead of the round after round of the same thing over and over again.
 
Frankly, no game has ever given me as realistic and immersive an experience as day of defeat. My very first online gaming experience was in the original Day of Defeat and I still remember carrying my Garand up the street in Avalanche rushing into the building on my right and clearing it with a teamate before perching up top and taking pot shots at the Germans. Ever since then it has held a special place in my heart (more than CS, or any game I've played since) so this is hardly an unbiased opinion, but if you want to be convinced take everything I say to heart.​
The infantry fighting is close, fast, and visceral, it's a gut-check every time you step into unknown (and therefore uncleared) territory. It's a game that forces teamwork to win and you form alliances on almost every single respawn. even if you decide to snipe or use an MG every single shot you make is crucial to those around you, will you cut down the three Germans before they shoot up an ally dashing towards a flag? No matter what role you choose you are in some way altering the gameplay of your teammates, and vice versa.​
The weapons and combat are exceptionally realistic and there is almost no gameplay style that isn't complimented by one or more of the classes offered. The maps as well are designed to suit ANY of the weapons perfectly. There are dozens of prime sniping spots, tons of brilliant spots to set up an MG, many routes to objectives which favor assaulting classes, and perfect spots to rush and find cover to use slower more accurate weapons. The flag-capturing dynamic forces frantic, team-binding moments where you MUST work together to prevent a loss. You'll find that in a very uncommon thread amongst online gaming that your teamates (and you yourself) will often sacrifice themselves for the good of the team. For example, forsaking the safety of cover to ensure that a particular flag isn't captured, taking a hail of fire to pick off an enemy flag-capturer.​
The game is the best looking WWII game available, the sound is unbelievable. If my experience in the boxy, background noise laden DoD of old was as incredibly immersive and fun as it was, the new version has upped the gameplay ante. Taking a game which is so fun at its core, and polishing it to such a beautiful level simply makes it better by a tremendous degree.​
There is a large amount of skill involved in the game, but by working as a team and using smart tactics even the most green newb has a fighting chance against a hardened veteran. No matter how good a player is in DoD a well-oiled team working with one another can turn the tide of a game against a group of unorganized but highly skilled players. It doesn't favor individual skill as much as many of the games out there (though there are rewards for being a good player and individual skill is highly valued and can turn the tide of a match), therefore team cohesion is apparent.​
If you are lucky enough to excel at DoD and find a skilled clan, the experience will become even more incredible. A team that knows each others strengths, weaknesses, and gameplay style will provide you with an incredible experience. Developing and testing strategies is fun, and trying them against equally matched teams is fantastic. You find yourself (and your team) constantly trying new things, your tactics evolve as the enemies become wise to your manuevers.​
Communication is key (I would highly, highly reccomend a microphone even for a casual player as it greatly increases your value to the team, as well as the amount of variety and success of tactics) and DoD has a vast array of commands, from silent hand signals, to screams of a sniper (at which point you must seriously consider how much you really value that hiding spot located a 5 second sprint through open territory away).​
 
I started playing dod with b2.0 and what was said above about teamwork was true, that lasted until the first retail release when for some reason they upped the footspeed and threw out larger maps that provided for more tactical play and the game became more of a world war II deathmatch. I moved over to RO but sadly it has never gotten the attention it deserved. I'm hopeful the new dod which has some promising changes will get back that feel.
 
One aspect of DoD that I really love is how battles can be really quick or sustained for a long time. The line moves up or back. You can Flank and out flank the enemy. It really is a great game for both snipers and rushers.

Also...Battle for Europe.
 
I dont think they run too fast. Thats about how fast id be running if there was a MG spraying bullets behind me or if a sniper was about to reach out and touch me in the face. But wait a minute, THEY DO NOT WET THEIR PANTS WHEN THEY GET SCARED. WTF!!!!!!!!!111 OUTRAGE! MOST UNREALISTC GAME EVER. VALVE PATCH THIS NOW. WTF KIND OF GAME IS THIS IF I CANNOT RUN AROUND WITH SOILED PANTS? No but seriously a lotta guys would do that in war. Sometimes they couldnt tell if they were shot, or if they had pee'd themselves.... or pooped.

Agreed. I was on a 42 player server last night. Played for an hour, neither side won a single round. Came damn close a few times
 
Just those rare and unique moments where you play as an entire team in pubs is right about the most rewarding thing you can get ;)
Sure, clans do this all the time, but a complete set of strangers working together to pwn the enemy? Priceless.

Not quite exactly what I meant. The game felt like a unreal game in which everybody was just running around everywhere fast randomly firing at things. <chuckles> Just didn't give me an impression of WWII.

I don't like the game, thats all I can say. So I won't be playing it. Not really anything else to say.

BF2 needs soooooo many improvements to feel realistic, realistic ballistics is a must for a game with that large maps.... I really don't understand why they didn't implement that :(

Anyway, DoD:S is really great, I think I like it more than CS:S because of the often even battles and that no weapon is really superior.
The best team wins, not the team with the best players.

A clan is all good and well, but having a bunch of strangers actually want to work together feels so damn good. People who probably didn't give a crap before, and now, with someone taking the position of a leader and getting everyone pumped up, they do care. It feels great when you are that leader. It feels great following that leader.

Clans are still nice though. =D

Battlefield 2 is also very fun. I like the modern combat. I just like the feel of the source engine better.
 
i'm not seeing much teamwork right now...i mean sure they ambush together, but the 4 guys ambushing is pretty much it. the other guys are all going by themselves and charging at the other team...but they're all alone. one guy dies the other pops out to kill the attacker, etc,etc.

seems like camping is where it's at....and i like that
 
For me the thing for DoD:S is the sickenly intense battles, where explosions and gunshots never stop, smoke is everywhere and there's bodies and debris flying everywhere.
To compare, in CS:S the rounds are usually first the quiet movement to position, then 20sec - 1 minute of intense fighting, then the rest of the round (2-5min) where the remaining players are trying to find eachother in the empty and silent buildings. In DoD:S, the fight never stops, there is a clear frontline in the fight, and the only quiet part is when you are sprinting towards it from your spawning point. And yeah, the battles are sometimes LONG, if the teams are balanced, it will last for hours and hours, and the frontline is moving all the time.
You can really make sacrifaces for your team, or you have clear objectives what to do to get the just one block forwards - clear this house from snipers, take out that MG from the window, kill these riflemen. Etc.
Yeah. It rules.
 
I like the atmosphere, the smoke and explosions. The maps look great and with the sound cranked up it sounds awsome. It's also very team foccussed - there's no room for heroes. It's been a while since i've been immersed in an online shooter like this.

The things I don't like - DoD encourages camping, which takes no skill. Whether you make it to cover without being sniped, torn down by heavy fire, shot in the back etc etc is more luck than anything. I except that this is part of the experience, feeling vulnerable and uncertain of what will happen - it does bug me though.

The recoil on the smgs is so much that most encounters are spam filled lotteries. The movement speed is fast also enough that a rifleman can dance around, dealing death from long range, medium range, even medium/short range, and dominate somone with an smg. Some balancing is inorder.
