What exactly is this "Tech-Demo"?

Is this the one that has been used by various sites to benchmark the performance of ATi and nVIDIA cards? Or something new?

I understand that it is a "stand-alone" thing, (like 3DMark®03 Benchmark utiltiy) and not like Unreal Tournament 2003's Benchmark that requirs the full retal game.

Also, how do you "pre-order" Half-Life2 via Steam? (in othr words, what version you will be downloding?)

The tech demo is just a demo map, to show the abilities of the source engine.
It may also be used for the benchmark.
