I believe that the age of wars on the West has ended about the same time the Cold War did.The West has just matured so much and it would be quite weird if another war started.Yes , there are some differences between the American North and South , but i think that a Jericho-esque scenario is highly unlikely.

The only way an overthrow of the government could possibly work is if both sides were in on it.

A civil war would get shutdown so quickly by the military.

If you look at history (such as in Ancient Rome), the military traditionally supports whatever side will benefit it the most, either through increased pay or better benefits. Which side of the political spectrum sounds more likely to give them that?

Without the support of at least a large portion of the military, any revolution would not succeed.

The military could just as easily split, with different generals and different state armies taking their divisions away from central control.

Also, individual units could break down and split away if the war was over an issue divisive enough.

This is what would happen.

We would split into separate nation-states. Most of the nation's armed forces would go to the right, and most of the nation's acting ability would go to the left. Those who owned all the banks and big companies would form a third state called New Switzembourg.

Not long after the split, the right state would take a zillion tanks and bombs painted with rebel flags and FairTax stickers, and crush the left state while the lefties were busy dancing in flowery fields with Ethically Treated chicken and anchovies which were all given equal wealth.

In retrospect, we (being the hidden fourth state) will see that the invasion of the lefties by the righties was probably the most humane solution since the lefties would have collapsed anyway since they produced absolutely nothing of value. The righties will eventually degrade into a bizarre hybrid of religious anarchy and each person will effectively own their own nation in their backyard.

I think that we are too politically inclined for any conflict to lead to true civil war; we all know that if we fought North against South or East against West it would lead to nothing but a big smoking crater across North America.
