What happens if HL2 is crap ?

The Half-Life 2 SP is going to be LONG(each chapter is about 4 hours long according to PC gamer mag). If you just happened to kill Alyx on *accident* or lose her in combat, you'll have tens of hours waiting for you just to get stuck. I dont think Valve would be that sadistic.
