What if the Combine are the Grunts from HL1?

Think about it. Remember at the end of the first HL, when G-man says "We now have complete control of Xen"? What if the military created some super army there, and came back to take over earth? :O

In a sense, yeah, they would be, but not in the way you're thinking.

When the Combine conquered Earth, the stronger of the humans were turned into Combine troops. Marines are a pretty good candidate for becoming a Combine soldier. The rest of the guys are either dressed in jump-suts and left to whine, turned into Stalkers, or probably ground up into Soylent Green.

What I'm thinking, is what if the Xen enviroment changed the Soldiers on xen, causing them to wear the gas-masks, ect. (The stuff they wear in HL2) Then, with thier new and improved bodies, all the new creatures harvested from Xen, and the technology of Xen mixed with thiers (Xen had technology, thats how grunts are made.) they just kind of came back and conquered earth.

Nope. Wrongo.
After HL1 ended, everyone lived in cities to escape the organisms from Xen. Who took over Xen (we assume the US, but it could be others such as IMO, the alien empire that the G-Man works for) is unknown. The combine came and smashed Earth's military forces in 7 hours. Humans were kept in cities, killed, stalkerized (TM) or made into combine solidiers. Aside from metrocops who are human volunteers, combine solidiers are humans forced into service. They're enhanced with combine techonology and given weapons, and then reprogrammed (how is unsure) till they are combine slaves. Now, as a side note, human solidiers don't get the best combine weaponry, as I believe, the Combine fear the possibility of those weapons being turned on them either by rebels, or their solidiers themselves... but that last sentence is theory.

No, the humans never took over Xen. He meant the portal storms which did stop, but it was too late. Combine etc.

And no, the combine are not affiliated with the military grunts. At all.

that's correct, but if they were then there is a good story if Shepard gets involved again. But it wouldn't make sense anyway. The soldiers and the combine are indeed different.

Yeah they did. At the end of HL1, the G-man tells you that "We have control of the borderworld, Xen."

They didn't :)

Well, at least I'm 99.9 % sure they didn't. IMO he was refering to the portal storms, which stop when you defeat Nihalinth. But in that elapsed time, the combine had already arrived.

Remember, time travels differently in xen. Also, the soldiers were bunched together - not invading - and were on sand, and the skybox was certainly not xenish.

I'm pretty sure that the G-man said they had control of it, but then again, I haven't seen the end of HL1 for a few months. But I think that scene he shows you where you see the dead bodies and destroyed vehicles was just put there to emphasize the fact that there was a huge battle on Xen.

The exact quote: "The border world, Xen, is now in our control for the time being thanks to you."

Thanks to you - Gordon Freeman. You killed the Nihalinth - stopped the portal storms.

The Combine are an alien empire from another universe, case closed.

Well, that means that Xen is now controlled by the military. Which means they now own Xen. As for the portal storms, don't those happen afew years after the incident?

Not it doesn't. It does not state that anywhere. It means he stopped the portal storms. The portal storms happen when Gordon was in the test chamber - not a few years after.

And anyway, the grunts are not the combine. There are no combine aliens on earth, the soldiers you say are humans upgraded with their technology. The combine invaded earth during the portal storms (Yes, during the time Gordon was in xen) and took over earth. The combine are an alien race that absorb other races. End of :)

WRONG!!
Once again, read HalfLife:Raising the Bar
they explain how combine solidiers on Earth are augmented humans. Or did you never notice the term transhuman forces? Or the clips in Vance's lab? In real life Id slap you!!

I've never read Raising the Bar. That could be why.

I'm not willing to dish out $30 for a book. Once it goes down in price, I'll get it. Then, I'll bring this argument back up. :)

G-man says "we" are in control of Xen"for the time being" , but he doesnt say who this 'we' are. He may be implying that his faction now has control of xen (all the dead human soldiers in the background as he tells you this shows that human forces didnt get that far). This is plausable, because you have destroyed the combine's only actual presence on xen, the Nihilanth, who controlled all the other combine entities in that area.

We do not know, that the combine had control of xen.
