What if...

Would you have bought Half Life (1 or 2) if it wasn't modable?

What if Half life and steam weren't as supportive towards modding as they are? Would you still have bought it?

Yes, easily. I have plenty of other games which aren't anywhere near as supportive, it's not the reason I got it originally. In fact, it didn't have a single impact on my decision, never does :p

Yes. I bought Half-Life 2 because I enjoyed Half-Life so much. Back in those days, I had limited internet access, so couldn't appreciate the other mods around.

However, it would have been less likely that I bought the Episodes. And it's a given that I wouldn't have bought any other Valve game if they hadn't been.

Generally I don't use mods, so yes, I still would have bought Half-Life or Half-Life 2, regardless of its support.

First post is a poll? You don't smell like a bot...

I didn't buy them for mods. Mods were a plus when I discovered them.

Half-Life is so diverse it doesn't even require mods but they're a great plus once you've played through a couple of times.

The game is well worth it's value even if mods weren't supported.

I'd have bought Half-Life, but I think it's safe to say that without it's modding capability it wouldn't have been kept alive for so long.

I don't play Half-Life because of it's modding capability, I play it 'cause it PWNS!!!111 LOLZOR!

When I purchased Half-Life 1, I was only very vaguely aware what a mod was. The years of extra value it gave me were brilliant, but not something I ever depended upon. So six years after purchasing Half-Life 2 having played barely any mods at all, I couldn't say I care.

Food for thought though: Would I have swallowed Steam as readily? Maybe not.

Mods were icing on the cake really, the game itself still bestted its mods.

I played counter-strike first.

In fact, I played CS in my cousins' house over 10 years ago, and I got absolutely ridiculously addicted. Thus, I decided to buy the game. I still have the box, and the box is the CS box. (not Half Life). I looked at the back and saw several other games which I really didn't care or know about (thought they were promotions or something, can't remember)

It was when I decided to explore the change game feature in CS that I opened up Half Life, Half Life Blue Shift, Half Life Opposing Force and a ton of other free mods (Didn't have Steam back in the days). I played opposing force first, and that game freaked me out early on when you see the scientist get tossed out the window by a zombie. That put me off the 3 games for at least half a year, before I finally decided to finish all 3 games.

Funny, I went to the store intending to buy CS. Not only did I get that, but hidden inside was one of the acclaimed games in history plus several other awesome bonuses (TF classic, ricochet, day of defeat, the 3 Half Life games etc), all of which I found at least half a year after I played CS. Come to think of it, I think I got at least 6 other games in that one box I brought, and the price of the box is way below that of an average game today.

I haven't played a single mod of Half Life 1 or 2 yet
My question is obviously yes
