Anyone here with a theoretical physics degree want to explain it to me?

It's what happens when you put a headcrab in the microwave

Rift in space time, makes a portal from one dimension to another. Like what John Titor used to get here. Be he used black holes instead of a xen crystal and a spectrometer.

That makes it much more clear. I am going to build my resonance cascade now.

Don't forget your Black & Decker.

Ok...now what the hell would Black Mesa want with an extraterrestrial crystal to begin with?

To be honest, I really didn't need to. All I needed to know is what I needed to shoot.

I beleive the real question is "how the hell did they get the crystal"

From Xen. In HL1 there is evidence that black mesa has already been to Xen and have collected samples of crystals, and even headcrabs (I think it's either in Surface Tension or Questionable Ethics, where there are cages with headcrabs in them)

they're in the middle of nowhere in a top secret underground research facility, figure it out. :hmph:

I know they got it from xen, but how did they get to xen in the first place?

edit: hrmm, i must of forgot. Havn't played blue shift in ages

It's explained in Blue Shift.

I havn't played blue shift, so could somebody please fill me in?

Sure.

Basically its HL's storyline with Barney as the protoganist, he has to find this ever elusive scientist and save his ass so they can get out of Black Mesa. He explains it was his teleportation experments that led them to Xen, and over time, Lambda Complex took over the project. This is where Xen specimens started to get collected, and now you know

Umm...this website says that G-Man = The Administrator.

Wrong.
-edit-

And where did they get all that info? Seems like they just made half that shit up.

Uhm thats the point , did you want him to do deep research on a facility which only exists in HalfLife. I found it interesting , and I can use my imagination to get beyond the fallacy of the Gman as the Administrator, it was logical before HL2 was announced.

I really wish I could have played the HalfLife on PS2 , but playing any FPS on PS2 is immensly difficult and annoying , and asking someone to play it seriously with you all the way through is nearly impossible.

I take it you havent read much into the story?

Great site thanks for the link! There might be a few quibbles here and there from know we now know about HL2 but still it's very well put together explanation.

Any errors are easy to forgive anyway because the various ports and expansions AKAIK aren't really Half-Life canon..

I've bookmarked it for the next time some knob says that Half-Life 1 had no story or that it was a rip of Doom... :)

I thought there was actually a book called Half-life, looks kinda similar

I'm sure there are lots of books called half-life, or atleast have it in the name. They won't make very good bed time storys though. Unless you find the rate at which particles decay interesting... well interesting enough to read a whole book on the subject.

First, it's a widely known fact that the G-Man is not the Administrator. When the clever bloke wrote the site, at the time everyone suspected the G-man was the Administrator. But later on we were to discover he wasen't. Since then he hasn't update the site with the relevant information. So it's just best to ignore that page.

"Half that shit" is actually in many peoples opinion a very accurate portrail on Half-life's stories and events etc. Isnt to hard once you've played the game for 5 years and all it's expansion packs to then begin to get some idea of it all.
