Well right now the only way you can get it is if someone else who already has a gmail account "invites" you to get one yourself. Thing is though people with gmail accounts have a limited number of "invites" that they can use, you seem to get them at random times as well.

Eventually once gmail isn't in a "beta" stage then you will be able to just go here www.gmail.com and sign up just you do with a hotmail account. I have no idea though when that will happen though.
