What is real rap, from 50 to J-5.

Try listening to a group called Jurassic 5, or their album "Power in Numbers". That’s rap at its finest, none of that commercial "Grab ya crotch, slap ya biotch" crap I can’t stand. When people say they hate rap, they always follow with examples of 50 cent's horrible lyrics, or some rapper who continually puts down everyone and keeps his b-boy image, saying he's oppressed and from the hood, when he has hounded dollar bills for toilet paper in a Beverly Hills mansion.

I can say I love rap, but cant stand most mainstream artists, rap=good, most people associated with rap=bad. Groups like J5 and even Linkin Park emcee Mike Shinoda are real rappers, that don’t feel they have to use the f-bomb every line; and they talk about real issues and not that bling-bling in da club shite. Mike is talented, in fact he is doing a solo album to show off his otherwise restricted skill do to the rock side of his band, check out his album, his guests are a virtual who’s who of underground rappers, featuring one of my favorites, Common. He said himself, he doesn’t want to go with the “Whose hot now” trend, I applaud him for that.

In short, I want to know how many of you actually hate real rap, or like me, love the style, just cant stand most of the people that do it these days.

J5 are an awesome act. PIN is a good album, I've got a bunch others as well :)

You heard 'O Le Le' with Tuna and that random oriental singer?

Yeah, J5 are the only 'rap' I listen to, I just can't be bothered with the attitude that goes on in most others

I have heard the song yes, and also "Comming War", very deep dark song.

I cannot stand most rap. I really don't have a problem with Jurassic 5 though. Just because they were in Jet Grind Radio they'd be ok in my book, but their stuff is actually quite good.

I just saw J5 live at the Fox Theatre in Boulder a couple weeks ago.

Pure class.

I totally agree with you. Most of the mainstream stuff is just horrible, but the more underground (or just less noticed) rap has turned me from my "rap is the devil" attitude to one of musical reverence. Bands like Jurassic 5, Sage Francis (I love this guy), Public Enemy, even Cypress Hill, not to mention a number of other bands whose names I can't remember have made me realise that rap is not all biotch slappin, gang shootin, money flaunting none-sense.

"we not ballin, or shot callin, we take it back to the days of yes y'all-in" :D

didn't know other around here knew rap.
my local scene resides there: www.hiphopfranco.com

:naughty: As of right now my favorite Hip Hop album would be "1988"- Blueprint.

I only like rap when it's conbined with another genre such as Faith no more: rock-rap

I guess the only guys I like that i guess you can say is mainstream is Nas, Obie Trice, and Proof (from D12). Other wise I like J-5, Talib Kweli, Mos Def, Common, Blackstar, Royce da 5'9", Atmosphere, MUG B local MC's, & Pharoe Monch.

Edit And most the guys from Wu-Tang Clan and Flipmode.

Aesop Rock is my favorite rap band. Run DMC and Beastie Boys are awesome too.
