What is the forum's rank system?

50 perhaps, maybe 100. I can't remember the precise list, it's more fun not knowing surely. Eventually you will get headcrab/zombie/fast zombie, so you'll have to face the music.

Just look around the forums (General Off-Topic mostly) and you'll see all the different kinds (mostly, CptStern still needs about 8500 posts to be God.)

The ranks are pretty weird, actually. The post count difference between the respective ranks can be very different.

What, like your rank goes up over time? Its a good idea - might prevent a bit of spamming but it doesn't reward people who contribute a lot.

Heh, I think he was talking about having the ranks named after elements.

My opinion on this, is that quite simply, the more ranks you have (ie smaller increments), the better. Keeps things interesting.
