What is the maximum level in Oblivion?

I'm already level 22, and I was just wondering what is the maximum level you can reach?

Hmm, well thats certainly cool that they made it so that you could - in effect - be able to level up 'forever', but I guess the skill caps by default are 99 or 100?

I wonder if monsters will level up that high as well? I've heard that guards stop leveling at like 24 though, which is a shame, I enjoy fighting them quite a bit. Maybe with the construction set I could change that if I wanted.

I calculate Level 53. 7 Major skills starting at 25 points, meaning 75 remaining points divided by 10 times by 7 = 52.5 + 1 = 53.

I think it's 256, because the levels are probably stored as a bit, and the maximum storage a bit has is 256.

Afaik its 255, as the value 0 is also stored.

Yes it would be 255. Matters if you start from 0 or 1.
From 0 = 255
From 1 = 256
