What is the worst official anime dub job ever?

I would say FUNimation's Dragon Ball Z dub was the worst. In fact, i could probably say that about almost all dubbed anime, but the original japanese DBZ actually had cool voices and decent voice actors, while the english voiceovers made me want to kill myself. What do you guys think was the worst dub ever?
 
Cowboy Bebop is pretty awesome. Ummm... trying to think of more...

Love Hina was dubbed horribly. Urrrrghhh... Kaolla's english voice was like a ****ing 40-year-olds.

Cowboy Bebop is quite a good dub. The worst dub I have ever heard is Ah! My Goddess! It is an insult to such a great series!! :flame: :flame:

The worst I've seen is in the DBZ films. Vegeta's name was pronounced wrong the whole time, Piccalo became 'Big Green' and in one Goku says "We must explode the roots".
 
How was vegeta's name pronounced wrong..if you're talking about "Begeta" then that just sounds retarded because even though the japanese pronounce it as "Begeta", it still sounds like they're saying it with a V..and it jsut sounds much better with a V.

All the voices in the english DBZ was 100x better than in the japanese. Goku didn't sound like a ****ing 2 yr old baby whining all the time, and Vegeta just had the most bad ass voice ever.

However, the dialouge in the english version was just plain terrible.
 
The original Akira dub on VHS is pretty infamous, I think. The DVD was better, but not a good alternative to just subtitles

Well, in the series it was always pronounced Veg-ee-ta. In the film it was Veg-it-a. It actually really annoyed me.

Vegeta's japanese voice was better and the voice acting was MUCH MUCH MUCH better in Japanese IMHO. Also, the Japanese soundtrack was better in my opinion because they didn't overdue the music and used the power of silence affectively, while having great battle music. I must say, i like the American music in the movies though.

Update: Maybe I was a little hard on FUNI. I just heard some of Ocean Group's DBZ dubs on youtube. Just...wow.
 
Hmmm. There was this ridiculously cute series on Animax while I was in Malaysia recently - Alice Academy. It was so ridiculously cute, but it had standard english voice-acting - which, in some sort of weird twist, helped it.

I seem to remember Cardcaptor Sakura being decent, but I haven't watched it in years, so I wouldn't know.

Cowboy Bebop is still the best dub IMHO. Ooh, Ghost in the Shell was pretty good, but I do prefer Batou's japanese voice.
 
I know Alphonse is, like, 10 or 14 or something, but yeesh, he has such a high voice. -_-

I always pictured his armour being red, anyway.
 
yea but vegetas funimation voice just fit his character PERFECTLY...much better than the japanese version.

I kinda liked his FUNimation voice. I loved the way he said FINAL FLASH!!!. I just think the japanese voice actor had better delivery of the lines. To each his own.
 
Princess Mononoke and Spirited Away were dubbed fairly well I thought.
 
Mononoke also had the benefit of NEIL GAIMAN!11!1!!!1! as the English Translator. Not to mention Billy Bob Thronton, Jada Pinkett-Smith, and a whole bunch of other A-List stars.
 
Heh, this must be the most on-topic derail in the history of the forums :P

Worst dubs I've heard would have to be any one of those after-school/saturday morning type kid's shows. You know, like one of the 300 spin-offs of Yu-Gi-Oh, or basically anything by Funimation or 4Kids (I can't remember which one is worse). Some of them you question how they could even call it a translation, when it seems like absolutely none of the original dialogue has been left intact. You feel like you're watching a retarded re-dub on youtube or something. It's so horrible that, even if the series were crap to begin with, it enters the show into a whole new class of awfulness to the point where it's completely unwatchable, probably even by most of it's target audience. The truly puzzling part is that some of the jokes they've inserted would fly right over the head of anyone in the age group it's intended for, but no adult in their right mind would be watching it in the first place. Even the possible hilarity factor of it is lost by the unfailingly obnoxious voices they give the characters. They're just flat-out not good on any level.

And that's from watching them for maybe 10 minutes at the most (seriously, stop looking at me like that :o).

Best dubs - Cowboy Bebop was pretty good. Fullmetal Alchemist movie was okay (I assume they use the same voices for the series aswell), but didn't really compare to the jap voices. Most of the Studio Ghibli films seem to be done pretty faithfully, some of the only stuff I feel really comfortable watching without subs (anyone notice Christian Bale on Howl's Moving Castle? :O).

It makes sense that Studio Ghibli movies are dubbed well - I remember an interview where Miyazaki said that he prefered foreign audiences to see the dubbed versions so they could pay more attention to the animation.
 
Awesome. Yeah, I can see what he'd mean. Whereas with most regular anime, you can easily divert your attention to subs and not stress about missing the 3 cycled frames of animation while the character talks (maybe 6 if their hair is mysteriously blowing in the wind).
 
Actually I think all the Ghibli dubs have stank. They tend to pick the voice actors on how well known their names are and billboard value rather than actual talent for voicovers. I've also heard that Miyazaki has been known to storm out of the dubbed screenings of his films.
 
Must be a lie. He loved Mononoke's dubbing, i know that.

In other news, I remember the first two seasons of Digimon being decent, and unwatchable in Japanese afterwards. However I watched them when i was like, 10 or something, so take that as you will.

that is not really a good example, because some will be put off by goku's voice, and that the 2nd is shorter, but that is the only scene i could find in 2 languages.
 
Worst I can recall, Samurai Champloo.
Best, DBZ hand down. I love those guys. The Japanese voices suck ass.

All the talking ruins what would otherwise be a bad ass scene. Also, I cannot stand Frieza's american voice. He had a much more menacing and deeper voice in the original.

That clip is amazing. I have only seen it dubbed in english. It's like 2 different shows. :O
 
I watched most of it in Japanese first. When I saw it in English I nearly pissed myself from deisbelief in how horrible the translation was. Even the subs in this version are miles ahead of the spoken English.

But they got Cowboy Bebop completely correct... how could they screw up Samurai Champloo like that?
 
One Piece has pretty bad dubbing.

I refuse to watch any dubbed anime though (minus DBZ - I used to watch that in English). It's so much better with subs. After getting to know the characters a bit I hardly notice it's all in Japanese.
 
I just watched the english dub of Elfen Lied. That was bad. very bad.
 
Uuurrrgh. One Piece has shitty dubbing AND they replaced the music with... crap.
 
I've watched Mononoke both dubbed and subbed more than a few times, I can't say either effects the atmosphere of the film any more or less than the other.

Personally, japanese dubs all start to roll together for me after a certain point. Yeah, they're well acted for the most part, but it's still all moonspeak. When all's said and done they're just putting emotions to the faces, and you're still just reading the dialogue from the bottom of the screen. It's preferrable to 95% of english dubs out there, but I'd prefer it were done well in a language I could understand so I could watch it as intended.
 
FMA is great, as is Cowboy Bebop...Scrapped Princess ranks really high on my list though.
 
I realize people are always going to be split over this, but DBZ had one of THE best dubs ever. Chris Sabat IS Vegeta's voice. Horikawa (Vegeta's seiyuu) is a nice guy, and he has a good voice, but in my mind he will never be Vegeta. In fact the only seiyuu I enjoy more from the Japanese DBZ is Norio Wakamoto, who did Cell (although I'm a bit biased because I'm a fan of other voices his done, namely Bison from CvS2 and Xemnas from Kingdom Hearts).

Worst English dub...off the top of my head I'm going to say Fushigi Yuugi. Everyone's voice makes me cringe and/or fills me with unreasonable anger. Had I not seen the series in Japanese years before Geneon got ahold of it, I'd probably hate the anime because of the voices alone.

Opposite end of the spectrum, best English dub: Tenchi Muyo. BEST. DUB. EVER. Tenchi shouldn't even be considered a Japanese series anymore; it's ours, the American cast was vastly superior.

I watched it in Jap a couple of years back, and it was so cool. Watched it in English on Animax the last time I went back to Malaysia (best thing about Malaysia is that their cable has a dedicated Anime channel > >) - HORRIBLE. I nearly ripped off my ears, i swear.

Mononoke is about the same dubbed or not. I do prefer the Japanese version though, it flows much better with the general atmosphere of the movie - but I wouldn't say that the English version is flawed at all, quite the reverse if anything.

I really should watch Tenchi Muyo. So many years on Adult Swim and I never got around to watching it...

Hehe. The first Cowboy Bebop episode I ever watched was "Jupiter Jazz: Part 1". That was so cool.

I must admit i kinda like Sabat as Vegeta. Most of my FUNimation/Ocean hate stems from the crap job they did with Goku's voice. I agree about Tenchi Muyo. It surprised me.
