Well, it's an FPS/RPG based on the World of Darkness, and the reason people mention it when talking about Halflife 2 is that they're both built on the same engine (the Source engine, one of the next-gen ones). In fact, Bloodlines is the first RPG built on a next-gen engine.
Oh, and the game is based on an old pen and paper RPG from White Wolf, so there's literally an entire library of background information about the setting and the characters. It's an entire world.
