We pretty much know what made HL1 so great, but...

Me never having played a single doom game (except a quick peak at the leaked beta ;) ), I wonder why people are dieing to see it. What did Doom 1 and 2 bring to the video game universe that people freak so much about it.

I want objective anwers, not nonsential fan dribble :).

HL2 forever, ha ha.

Doom was what really defined the first person genre. It set up us the bomb, so to speak :)

Age of 7 or 8, blowing up evil demons, fun stuff if you ask me! :naughty:

I have many fond memories of playing Doom with one of my old friends. I agree with Shuzer, in that it was a game that defined the first person genre. Doom 3 is like the old grandfather of FPS's coming back to show us it still has what it takes :)

Before Doom there were no fps, besides Wolfenstein3D, it was the first of its kind and spawned great games like HL.

Ahhh good times.

Yeah Doom was the firtst real fps lan game. (Well the 1st one that was banned at colleges and other places of learning) (Too many people where lan gaming instead of doing they're school work) :)

(Yeah my spelling sucks)

Because it was mindless, frightening, gory fun. With a workable deathmatch. :)

And you get to kill demons from hell!! :)

Could you ask for better bad guys?? I don't think so :D

Its fun. Simple enough. Same reason the Serious Sam games are great.

It was one of the first fps'

(I'm not sure if Wolfenstein was before or after)

Wolf was before....but before that was Catcomb Abyss.

I highly recommend you download the shareware version (demo) and try it out yourself.

It was the simplicity, gore, and satisfaction that made the game so great.

You had no real mission objectives, other than get from start to finish alive. At the end of each level there was a set of statistics that evaluated how you did. Kills, Items, and Secrets. There was also a par to beat for those who are feeling ambitious.

The controls were simple. There was no mouse, just to arrow keys to move and a couple others to open doors, chose weapons, fire, etc.

DOOM (like Wolfenstein before it) gave the illusion of 3D. You were essentially moving around in a 2D world with 2D characters, but it presented the illusion of 3D graphics.

DOOM really needs to be played in order to fully understand what we are saying.

Doom pretty much started the FPS genre (as well as the "modding" aspect of it, not to mention multiplayer).

Aye, invented Deathmatching. Particularly internet deathmatching.

modding for Doom was great fun, no worrying about polycounts, normal maps, coding tons and tons of stuff. And unlike the HL series you could go in and change actual maps themselves, add new area's, make them harder to play, more secrets. It was great fun trying to use existing weapons to create new ones by altering certain settings and changing how they work just enough to get something different and usable.

Good times indeed. I miss playing Doom for hours on end.

Shotgun (TM). nuff' said.

Nothing was more satisfying than blasting demons with THE Doom shotgun (TM).

Doom was so good because it was plain fun, plus the level design was top notch. Serious sam is fun and all but its missing the level design which can make or break a game.

Besides being the first true FPS it added a lot to the genre, especially atmospheric lighting.
