I was thinking what makes a good actor?

I really havent focused so much in actors in a movie so I allways wonered that, and what make diferent a good actor of a movie that a actor of a tv

off course I hav noted that good actors are worth watching and the bads one dont

but anyway what you think make a good actor good?

The actor's ability to show a realistic reaction to a certain event, always a pet peeve of mine in any movie.

The ability to make you believe that they're actually that character, and are experiencing all the emotions their character is feeling.

Someone who strikes an appropriate balance between melodrama and deadpan. It annoys me to no end when I see actors over- or under-acting their lines. Obviously there's a lot of leeway for each character to have their own emotional range, but it's grating to watch someone perform their character at one of those emotional extremes.

The ability to make the audience feel an emotion is primary.

Next would be the ability to make the audience sympathize with you.

A good face, body, and voice helps, for both sexes.

And finally, the ability to not be a dick off camera...

I think that's not over-acting so much as just looking like a retard on camera :p

Judging whether someone is over- or under-acting isn't something you can determine for sure, since everyone has different definitions of those, or they have a different knowledge of "appropriate" emotional reactions to events. For example, something I consider to be over-acting might look fine to someone else, or I might think someone acting perfectly okay is under-acting to others. Basically, it's whenever someone's emotions on-screen don't match or come within range of what you think that character should be acting like.

If you guys read Jack Higgins stories... Sean Dillon is a clever spy with versatility in acting. Hes a great actor in the books by how he can go into many characters and not just be himself. And always he is very convincing and can get away with anything dealing with peoples emotions and situations.

Great actor:
-The ability to go into many character roles and not just be themselves while showing their normal emotions.
-The physique to be "sexy" and "ugly" - that be amazing.
-Know all the accents and talk just like the people youre portraying.
-Everyone have different facial and body expressions - they got to adapt to that and keep it convincing.

But really there is an easy way to know if the person is a great actor. While watching the actor in a well written and directed movie, you'll forget the actual actor's name and buy in to the character he/she is portraying. That is the very moment when they become more than who they're, thus making the entire audience escape from reality into the intended fantasy.

So I have to say its hardwork being an actor, you have alot of pressure to perform the perfect art. Otherwise, the critics and us will bad mouth them and make them cry (jk). This is only if the actor really wants to be taken seriously.

I don't really know what makes a good actor, maybe it's simply understanding the character you're playing and in a sense becoming that character. It's pretty obvious when you look at certain actors which ones can do that and which ones can't. For example, Tom Cruise always plays himself. Someone like, say, Anthony Hopkins doesn't. Cause he's a proper actor.
