What Makes A True Hacker...

What is a hacker?

1. A person who enjoys exploring the details of programmable systems and how to stretch their capabilities, as opposed to most users, who prefer to learn only the minimum necessary.

2. One who programs enthusiastically (even obsessively) or who enjoys programming rather than just theorizing about programming.

3. A person capable of appreciating {hack value}.

4. A person who is good at programming quickly.

5. An expert at a particular program, or one who frequently does work using it or on it; as in `a Unix hacker'. (Definitions 1 through 5 are correlated, and people who fit them congregate.)

6. An expert or enthusiast of any kind. One might be an astronomy hacker, for example.

7. One who enjoys the intellectual challenge of creatively overcoming or circumventing limitations.

8. [deprecated] A malicious meddler who tries to discover sensitive information by poking around. Hence `password hacker', `network hacker'. The correct term for this sense is {cracker}.

THE END...
Notice the very last point... cracker.
Now everybody accept it. And don't give me thats soo 1992 crap.

i have to agree, this attack was pretty impressive not to promote this kinda thing but there does seem to be some luck/ skill in what this person(s) did. Hopefully valve will stop using outlook

ahhahahahhaha I KNEW you were going to quote that! :cheese:

Too bad for you that that isn't exactly a definitive source for the English language. "Hacker" as "intruder to computer systems" is in such common use that no matter how much someone claims it's this use is "deprecated" won't change the facts.

But why do I bother, people who share your opinion are so entrenched in their thinking that nothing will change their minds... too bad for me that I get annoyed by their smug and incorrect "no hackers here you must mean crackers" statements. :hmph:

hes just an evil hacker thats all. just cause we dont like it doesn't mean he doesnt deserve the title.

I'm not trying to "dignify" them by calling them hacker(s), but you can't exactly dial into their network without some decent knowledge...

It's scary what people can do over the internet...

And how the heck did they download that 160 MB file without anyone noticing? Wouldn't some sort of alert in IT go off? Do they have an IT department at Valve? Wouldn't their server log any outside IP addresses d-loading from their own HDDs?

Hacking an email account isnt that hard, so once you are in the Intranet, you just send that keylogger..wich is indeed a script :flame:

Just because it's common use is "an intruder to systems" it still doesn't mean that this is correct. This is simple media error.

If you are claiming this, then ignorance rules all then?

yeah pHATE1982 is very very right in what he is sayong on this thread...

Hackers unite and lets hack the bastard who hacked valve :(

Hacker = One who uses programming skills to gain illegal access to a computer network or file.

Cracker = One who makes unauthorized use of a computer, especially to tamper with data or programs.

You can bitch about people calling him a hacker all you want, the fact is thats the correct dictionary term. Go pick up a modern English dictionary and look it up.
