I'm almost done with my Beretta M96 (I've got two things to do, the grips and the left side safety). I made it in XSI. How do I get it into my mod? I plan on having duals (like the CS ones, but cooler since they're mine :) ) and all I'll have done either today or tomorrow is the one gun done. How do I get two, then get hands on them and such?

A tutorial or quick instructions would be greatly appreciated.

iv finally got round to doing this with hl2 but am having various troubles with cannonfodder's decompiler and importer or exporter.

i am, however, planning on writing a tutorial on this but you will need to wait until i get it done first :)

there is one way i know which works, and that is to use CS(not CSS) models for the hands etc. but the downside to this is that you use the CS arms which suck.

I need to replace the hands from HL2 for all the guns, since in my mod you are a Combine. Combine don't have orange on their gloves. So every gun needs to have their arms changed.

Also, how many polygons is reasonable? My handgun is not quite done and has about 2700 polys. I'm thinking it will be around 3000 when it's done. Then I'll have two for a total of 6000 polys. Is that a lot? I don't think I can optimize much more without losing nice detail. I'll show pics when it's done.

6000 is too much. thats a bit too high for eveb player models.
it should be about 3000 for a weapon. but since yours is 2 handguns you could probs get away with a bit over

Crap. So each gun is going to have to be about 1500 or so, right? I've got one piece left to make (spring break, so I'll get it done today), then I'll need to thorughly optimize it and cut out some detail. I think I might keep a high poly and a low poly version.

Well, thanks for the tip, SomeOne. The gun will have to be skinned first, which I don't know how to do either. If anyone knows some good tutorials on how to skin models, could you point me that way, please?

ive only just started trying to skin my unfinished weapon models but what ive learned is like you highlight the polymesh that you want to skin press 3 to go into render mode go on get texture image and browse for your image. then theres a button on the box that has a thing saying new you click that and choose like cubic or wateva

Okay, I'll look into that. Thanks. Right now I'm still in elation as I've completed my first XSI project and I think it turned out pretty well. Lemme see if I can get them posted...

Those are the two sides. Like I said earlier, they're pretty high-poly. I need to fix that, as I want to have two. But that's a project for a later date. Right now I'm going to get them printed up and brag to all the kids in my CAD 8 class (I'm a senior in high school).

Oh, please comment my handgun. I personally think it's awesome, considering it's my first. My thanks go to DeSty and his wonderful tutorial on the Colt 1911.

They look great IMO. I can't wait to see 'em skinned.

(What does IMO mean?)

Thanks Ennui. I gotta cut the polies down first, then I'll skin it. Then a simple clone and viola... duelies. I'm also thinking about modeling my dad's Mini-14. The stock he put on it and the scope make it look kind of like a gun a rebel would use, so I'm going to have a rebel assault rifle as well as the overwatch assault rifle for my mod. That plus a flamethrower, a sniper rifle, I dunno. Whatever I feel like really. Maybe I'll overhaul the shotgun to make it more like a classic shotgun (like the one Father Gregori has).

I've got my hands full with guns and ideas, so expect me to post pics of them as I get them done.

that looks pretty good for your first XSI model. have you used any other modeling apps before?

Yeah, my school has 3D Studio VIZ, and I've worked with that for about 3 school years. Then I found GMAX and played with that for about two ro three weeks. I've also tinkered with Maya a bit.

This is the first thing I've actually done in XSI. I found some learner tutorials, but they were not videos so it was semi-difficult to follow them. That and the stuff they had me make was stupid.

yeh most of the tutorials i followed would say like no use the move point tool and weld the polys and id be like how?!!! your models look awesome. are you doing them for a mod or just for fun? im currently working on a model of a colt1911 from the tutorials and then im gona do a berretta liek that and a glock ill post some pictures when their done. also on css like only the part of the model that you can see in the first person view has polys the rest has nothing their to reduce the poly count so aslong as you watch the animations to make sure you dont see the part that doesnt have polys on it.

he's working on a mod. One of those godly people that decide to do the mod themselves. <3 archvilell, angry lawyer, and all those other pwn people (NOW PM ME AND VOTE!)

i didnt explain that too well but you probally know what i meen

yeh im doing my mod on my own its alot easyer than to try and find ppl to help you lol

im interested, what kind of school has a modelling programme?
im guessing your from the states and probably go to a private school and does your school like teach this kinda stuff?

im from uk i learnt all this from home but the uni im gona try an get into teaches it its teeside university in middlesbourgh

Hah, hardly. Yeah I'm from the States. Iowa in particular. I go to a public high school. Our CADD teacher has convinced the school board that 3DS VIZ is a good thing. Unfortunatly he knows nothing about the programs. He got them and lets us figure out how to do stuff. He has books and such and lets us find tutorials, but he personally does not know how to do much. I know it sounds like he's a moron, but I actually think it's better that way since self-taught skills are the hardest to forget. Anyway, he got a package deal to get VIZ, AutoCAD 2004, DataCAD 200(something). He leases the programs, not buys them. So each year he has to pay the company again. But he gets all the upgrades in the package. Since it's a school deal (and VIZ is a very lame version of MAX; GMAX is better and it's free) it's fairly cheap. My friends and I got the assignment of finding free programs on the internet because his budget is getting cut and will have to drop VIZ.

Yeah, I'm doing my own mod. Angry Lawyer has helped with the little bit of coding (unlocking the stunstick and changing the HUD color to blue) and one of my friends from work will create some music for me (I have no musical talent), but other than that, it's all me. I create the levels, I create the few new guns, I create everything. I plan on doing most of the voices (what little there are except for storyline dialogue).

Like my signiture says, you will be Adrian Shephard once again. The G-Man wakes you up and sends you back to earth. Since the government has collaborated with the Combine, all military and police organizations are now Overwatch and Metrocops.

That handgun is for my mod. I'm going to have two of them like in CS. After that, I'm going to make my dad's Mini-14, a flamethrower, a sniper rifle, and replace the shotgun (the fact that two shots come from one barrel annoys the crap out of me, however it is useful).

Any other questions? I enjoy telling you guys what I hope to do. I don't think my mod will be complete any time soon, so don't wait for it. When it's me, myself, and I, things tend to go slow.

Okay, I got my model down to 2081 for one handgun. This is a little high I think, but I dont want to delete many more faces or I'm going to lose important details. The right side of the gun is pretty much stripped bare. It still has the main face, but it was thorughly cleaned out. The right side still has all it's detail.

I'm thinking that a 4000 poly model will be exceptionally high, but I don't think I'm going to worry about it anymore. By the time my game is finished, computers will be able to handle it.

I have no idea how to skin stuff. I was actually hoping just to make most stuff solid color then add textures where needed, but I don't know if that will work. If anyone has great, easy-to-understand tutorials, I would be oh so hppy :) .

The guns will be .40 Smith and Wesson, my personal favorite. Faster than a .45 ACP but more punch than a 9mm.

Ahh, good point. Now that you mention it, it does look gigantic. I don't know if I'll fix it or not for two reasons really.

1.) Bigger is always better :D
2.) The laziness factor is pretty high since I'm working on another model.

Thats for the observation though. I was just blowing smoke, and it will probably be fixed.
