Might as well just call it an Ant.

That looks nothing like an antlion to me.
Possibly the queen, but just made smaller for the pic.
Or some really low-caste worker.

Well if you take in proportion to the antlion in the background you can assume that it's pretty much the same size as the antlion.

Hind legs extend forwards, front legs go back, rear part of the body high up, large head. Looks like it to me. It's called the antlion worker so take your guess.

There is a section of Ep.2 where we will be going through the burrows of the ant-lion world, you can see a small portion of it in the episode 2 videos. The general consensus is that this smaller and weedier looking ant-lion is a worker. The other underground ant-lions have blue markings now too.

As for the queen debate, I can tell you that from owning 'Raising the Bar' and the concept for the Ant-lion Queen & King, it's nothing like it at all. Those two are big bastards I assure you. Both dropped for purpose that the ant-lion world didn't make it into HL2 or Ep1, but we could see them this time...

My guess is that we won't be seeing the King or Queen, but who knows. If they were going to put it in, this would be the place to do it.

A separate antlion queen NPC entity would be great since people could use it in user-made maps.

And Co-op mods too while we're at it.

And assuming what Hectic Glenn said is true about the King & Queen (of antlions) this isn't either of them.

It probably is the worker. But wikipedia (i think) states that worker antlion's look exactly the same as the normal ones. The only difference being that the worker's ass glows.

I'd figure the antlion king/queen w/e you wanna call it would just be a regular looking antlion with different markings... Sense that is the common way it goes in the insect world... or i could be wrong, I don't even have Raising The Bar. :/

There are a few species of ants that enslave other, lesser species (e.g, Polyergus Samurai). Maybe the antlions did the same? That could explain the differences in physical characteristics aside from leg structure.

FFS, how many times must I tell you people

THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS AN ANTLION QUEEN!

Maybe I should just make a wiki entry that says, "Antlion Queen - Does not exist."

They didn't state it. Which is the point. They've said that antlions are a patriarchal society, which means they have a king but no queens. Or rather, at least drawing from most terrestrial, monarchal insect societies, there are no kings; therefore it stands to reason that there are no antlion queens.

Also the fact that antlions go into a "spawning season," which suggests that mating is done by a breeding class, rather than eggs being laid by a female queen.

And since Valve's never said anything about a queen there's no reason to believe there is one. Since the leadership role is fulfilled by the king, and the breeding role is filled by a subclass of antlion (or perhaps even the drone antlions that we see in the game), then there's no need for a queen.

If Valve says there's a queen later that's fine, but for right now there is no such thing as a "queen antlion." Hearing those words irks me.

True, there is no such thing, but people can pretend and theorise if they want. As for me, I like to think that the breeding is done between the king and the guards (IIRC Valve have refered to them as queens a few times).

it should be quite hard fighting them since they spit out poisonous green, er..spit which causes gordan to have damage over time. furthermore, we wont have a shotgun in that underground lvl as yet..

He don't need no shotgun.:D

And it's stated that the Guards have no gender.
Like they're just guards that...guard the hive...nothing more.

Darkside is correct, checking RtB says nothing of an antlion queen whatsoever.

Let me quote a small section regarding the antlion king to tell you why the previous image certainly isn't the king...

The antlions were to have a patriarchal society, much like ants have a queen, but the antlion king was meant to be bigger than the strider. For a rough ideal of scale, Gordon is stuck between the toes of the beast, which towered some 60 feet. During development, the topside antlions started working, and more and more of the underground spaces were cut, until there was no place left for the king.
But as we see in that picture...it is underground. Never say never. So the king, bigger than a Strider - 60ft tall D:

Also note it wasn't cut because it wasn't working, it was cut because there wasn't a place for it. Now there is, so here's hoping Valve thought it worked in their play test sessions.

I don't think it would work, the Antlion king was monstrously huge. It was even taller than the Striders, it was esentially a boss.

... Picture pls? :D

I don't think I can, I think its against the rules to post copies. If you have Raising the Bar, you'll get the idea. ;)
It was never ingame the pic of it, but it had a concept art of it and it told a pretty good description of it.

Aww... I was sooo lookin forward to that... Cause if it's the same basic design of a guard... Holy shit. :D

I suppose. I prefer to speculate about things that are there, rather than things that aren't there. I might've seemed a bit TOO harsh though.

Good lord I hope not. I don't mean to be unnecessarily graphic here but if myrmidon rex, a 60ft. tall behemoth, attempted to...copulate...with a guard that stands no taller than 11ft. high, I think it'd...well, it'd rip it in half. And if some of you can't understand how I'm not going to bother explaining it to you, because your minds are too young for it.

Lol... lolololololol...

That was funny. XD

I have no idea why either! ^^

But yeah, I wanna see this F*ckin thing already. ><

i'm not going to lie. . those dont look like a very interesting enemy really. . .kinda bland for Half-Life to be honest. . .

i guess it is a harvester tho. . .

I couldn't help but think the same thing. I thought the introduction of the Antlion guard was enough. I'd rather see something different rather than the same thing 10 times bigger. Even an evolved Xen creature from the first Half Life would be better.
