Ok i'm formally mr. nubert, but what the hell does [sic] stand for? I see it written/typed all the time but for the life of me i can't figure it out...
Why don't people just type the crap out!!!!!! Its so frustrating to read something that is sprinkled with IIRC, or IMO etc. GRRRRrrrRrRRr :frown:
Anybody know of any more of these that need decoding?

sic:

Thus; so. Used to indicate that a quoted passage, especially one containing an error or unconventional spelling, has been retained in its original form or written intentionally.

IIRC:

If I recall/remember correctly

edit: Doh! Innervision961 you beat me to it

oh thank goodness!!!!! everything is so... I'm seeing the world with such clarity now! Thank you cptstern!

the internet is so confusing imho

edit: btw what does WID stand for??

do you mean WID or WIP?

EDIT: WID = When it's Done

WIP: Work in progress

Do you guys know AFAIK (As far as I know) and AFAIR (As far as I remember)? It's pretty common here, but when I used it here once, some people asked what it meant.

I think sic stands for spelling in context.

Actually, I think it's from latin.

I use sic whenever I want to take the piss out of someone's spelling. Like the other week someone replied to my post saying "Your wrong". I and replied "Sorry that you think my wrong (sic)".

Not very witty, really.

did you know that IMOTCAMNSASBRFTI stands for:

In My Oppinion Thes Crappy Abreviations Make No Sense And Should Be Removed From The Internet ?

Well, I rarely use them, tbh.

We should make a sticky of commonly used abbreviations around here. I think it would help many of the members of the site, including me. Here are some that I picked up:

pw3d = owned
wtf = What the F***
lol = Laugh out Loud
lmao = Laugh my ass off
imo = in my opinion
imho = in my honest opinion
tbh = to be honest
wip = while in progress
rofl = rolling on the floor laughing
gl = good luck
hf = have fun
stfu = shut the f*** up
gtg, or g2g = got to go
gfg = good f***ing job
n00b = oh come on, ya newbie :-P

tbh imo abbrev. suck. Is the milliseconds saved really worth the sacrificed comprehension?

someone tell me what the **** props means... I see that all the time, but I have no clue what it means (i.e. "props goes to to soen-so for being a clever shit")

yes :)

I tried to confuse you more with the kudos comment ....damn my feeble brain

Sic can also stand by a crossed-out section to indicate it shouldn't have been - redundant online though. :p

Someone who I know thought lol meant lots of love. This simple mistake nearly cost them a friendship when someone died and they said lol to the sibling over the internet.

Anyway, typing is so much faster than writing, and although its not as fast as talking (Well, I suppose that depends on how fast you type) its still quick enough to not need to bother with these abbreviations.

I shouldn't laugh really, but that's hilarious!

I was about to say the exact same thing. But seeing as I took the effort to find the quote, I'm going to paste it.

<dreamer> Gargamale: a girl that posts on the local goth forum used to think lol meant lots of love, and got a rather rude awakening after someone's mother died - "how was the funeral? lol"
<Jesterace> haha
<Gargamale> LOL

It can mean both. I try not to use abbreviations too often, although I use tbh quite alot.

I just don't bother, its easier to type normally and not have to think about what abbreviation to use.

So far I haven't seen anyone give the proper definition of [sic]. I'm no English scholar or anything, but I'm pretty sure I'm right about this.

[sic] is used when you're quoting someone and part of their sentence was spelt incorrectly. You include [sic] to let the reader know that you did not, yourself, mispell the word or make a typo, but rather to let them know that the original author is the one who made the mistake.

For example: I was talking to my friend over MSN yesterday and he had this to say about HL2 vs. Doom III. "I don't know witch [sic] game will be the better of the two, but I plan on buying both."

Hope that helps. :cheers:

Someone, PLEASE tell me what "SOL" means.. lol, I've never gotten that one. The ONLY one I don't understand.

Almost makes no sense. I guess that's about as logical as you get for the internet, though :|

gamer: "do you have any more copies of Doom3"

retailer: "no sorry you're SOL"

outta luck makes sense, but adding shit before it doesn't add to it, or make much sense..

Such is why it said it ALMOST makes no sense, but it does.

it's quite common in north america ...I've heard non-computer people use it ...but then again we tend to butcher the english language :)

I've heard it on the radio 12830918 times. I've never actually heard it used first hand (and I live in North America).. and I never heard an explanation of it until now. Cheers for that :)
